My Kraken Sea Monster
« on: June 07, 2012, 12:57:56 AM »
A couple months ago I got the idea to build a Kraken sea monster from dinosaur toys I could pick up at the swap meet for a dollar or two.  I was able to get four dinos in just a couple weeks.  The key was finding dinos with good tails.  Once I had them, I cut the tails off and attached small plastic discs (I used a leather hole punch) to serve as the suckers on the tentacles (the dino tails).  When those were done, I stuck them in Milliput to provide a water base for each tentacle.  Initially the only mouth I could find was Reaper’s Desert Thing, which I again surrounded with Milliput to provide the appearance of water.  However, a couple weeks ago, I found a Star Wars’ sea monster toy at the swap meet for a dollar so I cut the head off and made it into a second Kraken head option.  Because I now have two head/mouth options, I provided pics of both.  The pirates swimming for their lives are modified Old Glory 25s pirates that I suck in Milliput.  I’m not positive who made the sinking ship because the package it came in was in bad shape due to age when I bought it, but it might have been by a company called Flag Ship Miniatures (just a guess).  I’m really pleased with the way my Kraken came out so we took a couple quick pictures to share.  Hope you like what you see.

Thanks to all for writing and for the very generous comments.  I'm very happy that you enjoyed my dino tails become sea monster.  The pirates are my first effort at 25mm/28mm figures, and I have been working on that collection since October.  I hope to have the gallery that represents phase one of that collection posted at the end of this month/June.  It will be a pirate raid on my fictional Caribbean town of San Cristobal (once Spanish/now British).  The Kraken project was a joy to do; easy, interesting and cheap.  Thanks again for taking the time to write.  Richard

Van-Helsing, I'm sorry but I'm not sure if you intended that I respond to this.  The Kraken is not directly related to my coming pirate raid gallery but it is part of the pirate collection I'm putting together.  In the process, ideas not directly related to the specifics of the project come to me and quite often I act on those ideas.
