Ok now I need help with a German Organization Name.
« on: February 07, 2008, 05:23:41 PM »
Ok well now that I have some good ideas about my french name needs I need a Name idea for a German Secret Society.

Basically this is a secret society of dark mystics or magic users who are engaged in a shadow war against the French.  Motivated by revenge for the loss of WWI and highly Imperialistic in Nature.

I need a name for these guys that sounds cool and an english translation.

The game will take place in 1919.

Secret societies (Geheimgesellschaften or, if You want to be 1920's en vogue, Logen) seem to have been a trend in 1920s Berlin.

The english word for Loge seems to be lodge.

When I read Your post, I immediately thought of Albin Grau. He was the producer of the original NOSFERATU film by F.W. Murnau.

He also was Meister Pacitius in the Pansophic lodge of Berlin(Pansophische Loge von Berlin), which actually had(Or still has?) a magic context.

Hope that helped. :)

If you want something a bit more historical go for the "Thule Gesellschaft" aka Thule society:

Of course there is no limit to our imagination here.

How about:

Hermansloge (Lodge of Herman - the German name of the leader of the Germanic rebellion against the Roman Empire in 9 AD which virtually stopped all Roman attempts of conquering what is today Germany. Herman was oftentime misused as the "first German to unify the German tribes", especially in nationalistic circles).

or:

Heinrichsloge (Lodge of Heinrich or Henry - Heinrich IV. was a German emperor who is best known for his conflict with the Pope in the 11th century - again misused by nationalistc circles as the emperor who tried to get rid of foreign domination in Germany - though in reality he seems to have been more interested in personal power than the idea of a unified Germany).

or:

Germanische Ahnenliga (League of Germanic Heritage - whatever you want them to think Germanic means)

or:

Rat der Weisen des Kyffhaeuser (Council of the Wise of the Kyffhaeuser - there is an old legend concerning a very powerful German emperor Frederic I. who died on a crusade in the 13th century. The legend says that he is just sleeping underneath the mountain of Kyffhaeuser and will return to save his people when needed most. He was also known as Barbarossa meaning redbeard, yes, just like German invasion plan for the Soviet Union during WWII. Tells us something about his popularity in the mind of the chauvinists).

So you see, lots of fun and potentially evil societies. If they're all nothing for you just invent something fancyful in English and we Krauts will translate it into German for you.

Would the "League of Virtue" kind of organization like you found in Napoleonic Prussia still be in vogue in the 1920s? I always liked them as German secret societies.

Wilhelm: Hey guys! Let's grow our hair out, play Beethoven on the piano, write poetry, and talk about how we deserved to lose to the French because we had lost our Moral Virtues as a society. Sound good?

Gunter: Ach, ja! My father hates Beethoven!

Klaus: Jawohl! Besides, my grandfather was at Leuthen and said that the army today is the pits. And I have Landwehr duty coming up and I want to write letters to someone other than my mother.

Wilhelm: Great! We'll meet in the basement of the chapel after midnight on Tuesday. Wear a dark cloak.

Everyone: Hooray!

Of course there is Doctor Mabusa and his various criminal and cultic enterprises (as depicted in the Fritz Lang film "Das Testament des Dr. Mabusa")...

Wiki Doctor Mabusa

And holy smokes, Mabusa is a member of Die Zwielichthelden (The Twilight Heroes)...

How about the Thule-Gesellschaft?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thule_Society
They were all drawn to the Keep; the soldiers who brought death; the father and daughter fighting for life; the people who have always feared it; and the one man who knows its secret....

Ah thanks for the help gents.  I am indeed going with the Thule Society after doing some research.  Not too much research though.  This is pulp after all.
