M60A2
« on: June 14, 2012, 05:23:28 AM »
Does anyone make a 28MM scale M60A2?

I haven't even found one in 1/48 scale.

I'm afraid not, as far as I'm aware, the only representation of this in miniature is a 1/35th conversion kit.

M60A2 'Starship'? Tamiya make one in 1/48, it's a prebuilt, prepainted motorised kit. I've seen them in the flesh, so to speak and they're not bad. Less usefully they also produce an early M60 with the old M-48 style turret. You can pick them up quite cheaply usually.

You'll note it's absent the return rollers but you could always add them and it's quite serviceable as a gaming model, with a repaint/touch up. It's also the only game in town.  :)

Note that those 1/48th moulds seem to have been passed around between companies - I have a T-72 and a Merkava from that range which I bought in Academy-branded boxes. So you might improve your chances of finding some if you look for Academy as well as for Tamiya.

Beyond that, I agree with Carlos that they are eminently suitable as gaming models. They are very robust and hefty (especially if you don't remove the motor block, which is a bit tricky anyway as the drive wheels and motor form a single unit IIRC), and the upper hull detail is quite crisp, yet robust enough to only require the usual painting techniques and not that fancy-pants airbrushing and pastels stuff.

The only issue might be that they are quite large, so they might not match too well with smaller 25-28 ranges. No problem with Black Scorpion or such, and I am not too picky (and prefer my vehicles a bit on the larger side, too) when it comes to scale, but the simplified, robust running gear and lower hull is quite a chunk.

Motorised you say...  >:D

That takes me back, I used to have a few motorised model kits back in the day, which crawled over ranks of plastic Airfix figures. At least until the batteries went.

Kudos to Carlos for his ability to sniff out all sorts of mundane vehicles and the like though, this isn't the first time he's done it.  :)

Thanks Gents, looks like I'll grab a kit from Academy, they seem to be everywhere, and the older turret actually fits better for the National Guard theme I was looking for.  ;)
