WW2 Weekend
« on: June 20, 2012, 04:05:11 PM »
I was lucky enough to take part in a 12 player WW2 game last weekend.  Lucky also to avoid all the horrible weather outside.

Saturday started with six separate 6 foot x 6 foot tables each set up in a similar way on which we played one against one through four different scenarios.  The first involved Allied infantry, with variable support trying to locate and destroy two German MG42s which also had some attached infantry.  I played the Alied side and lost as did most of the other Allies.

The second game involved both sides attempting to take and hold as many buildings as possible.  The buildings had unknown variable values unrelated to their apparent importance.  As my Canadians had been supplied with half-tracks I was able to seize the objectives a bit quicker and hang on to them

The third game involved military police attempting to prevent routing troops from looting.  There were opportunities for negotiating and this did work sometimes but as we are all wargamers we natural resorted to shooting.  Although my "Mounties" lost three of their four half-tracks in one single explosion they ran out winners as did all but one of the police teams.

Finally, another capture and hold scenario, but this time with the Germans in a village and the Allies trying to force their way in.  The Germans deployed in buildings which were not objectives and as my opponent stayed put I was able to chalk up a third Canadian victory.

On Sunday all the tables were pushed together leaving a central void to obviate too much stretching.  The game we played was based on Villers-Bocage with teams of Shermans trying to hunt down Wittman and his mate in two Supertigers.  We did not deploy much infantry but just enjoyed slugging it out with the tanks.  Something like 24 Shermans against 2 Tigers and 12 PzIVs.  Wittman and his pal knocked out lots of lorries and half-tracks but when the tanks turned up he turned into Wussman and did hardly any damage before both Tigers were knocked out by basic Shermans.  Wittman was allowed to survive and try again in a PzIV but was quickly knocked out again.  Victory was finally awarded to the Allies.

Just wish we could have something like that here in Portugal...!
Maybe someday you could round up some players, travel here and have an event!!! At least it's a good old sunny place for some vacations at the beach and some wargames too!

What a fine looking game.
Large games are hard to get right and balanced.
But when you do, its alot of fun.
