Dayak Warriors
« on: February 10, 2008, 10:41:39 AM »
I've started cleaning up 25 Eureka Dayak warriors and was wondering if anyone else had painted these fellows. They look a lot heavier armored than pictures that I have been able to find from the 1890s onward. Some of the minis look like they might have a chainmail cape (?)but this could be some kind of fabric. Also many have a gorget, are these shell or a European metal trade good?  I have noticed that the swords seem very different from Dayak swords for sale on ebay. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Could you take a photo of them as the ones on Eureka/Fighting 15 site are very small. They did wear straw, leaf capes perhaps thats what they are?

I believe the 'capes' are dog fur, but you probably know that by now.

I think they had wooden armour, I saw some of it in the Horniman museum years ago.

I could be mistaken though, it was a fair few years ago, I think I was playing truant at the time  ;)

I second the vote for the photos Lon, have you got the one with the blow pipe? He looks superb 8)

Well I've lead an evil life, so they say, but I'll outrun the Devil on judgement day.

Chick and Bugsda,
I do believe that it is wooden armor.  After some research I found this on eBay a while back.

Bugsda, yes I do have the fellow with the blow pipe....... and like the others he is still part of the lead mountain  >:( >:(

Traditonal armor would mostly have been wooden or woven fiber. But having been raiders & robbers of anyone that might have passed through their territory. They might have just about anything taken from Europeans or Asians too. If it is still servicable it could be centuries old. Like an old morion or other helmet from a Dutch or Portegese explorer.
