Yep, they're historical.  There's as well documented as probably can be in Foundry's East Africa volume.  There have been a number of Colonial Adventures threads on them, at least one showing a better version of this plate:



Sadly, the Zanzibar History site seems to have died.  Huh; here's an interesting postcard, with them looking particularly informal:
