Building a medina quarter

Hello I'm building a generic medina quarter with a Moroccan/North African flavor.  I'll be using 2'x2' bases and three or four buildings on each base complete with removable roofs and interiors.  The first will be a medina within a medina as it will be walled off and have it's own small gates.  

I've decided to use cork tile to build the buildings and I will likely paint the cork up without adding any additional texture.  



Any imput would be helpful as to what kinds of building I should start with.  I figured since this first one may also be used to represent a subburb or even a stand alone outpost in the desert that it should have a Mosque.  Any imput on other buildings or features?  

Also any cork building tips would be helpful.

I think what stands out to me is that these buildings are very irregular and as such they need to reflect this make them all slightly different in size. I have sloped some of my walls to reflect again the rough nature of these.  Finding reference pictures is always good.

Great idea Ironworker and I'll be following the WIP closely - only because I had a similar idea - but that's as far as I got.  :(

Have you thought of having the 2x2 tiles have a certain amount of regular roadways/paths/alleys/whatever so that you can rearrange the tiles and have loads of different layouts?

That didn't come out so well...but hopefully you got my gist.

When I visited Malta, we went to Mdina [I believe this was the old Capital, but is now home to the Rich]. This is a fantastic walled town, built on a hill. It has IIRC mostly Medieval/Renaissance architecture, originally built by the Island's pre-"Knights of St John" Arabic inhabitants. Some of the streets are so narrow, you can stretch your arms out & touch both walls.

Now that looks familiar.
Mdina (derived from the Arab Medina, which simply means 'town') was, as GM said, the old capital.  Buying a place there would cost more than all the miniatures owned by all the Lead Adventure posters would be valued at, even including Prof's fantastic paint jobs. The material used is limestone. The wall to the right is heavily eroded by wind-carried dust (aeolar erosion). And yes, you can reach across some of the walls.

The town was originally a Roman site (probably Bronze age ahead of that), and was then taken over by the successive invaders. The Arabs resized the town shrinking its size to make it more defensible. It has Medieval walls on the rear, and more modern 16th century and 17th century fortifications on the front - the latter being the knights' work. There are several building styles, none (thankfully) modern, and one dating back in part from Norman times. Purportedly, at least. Some of the older buildings were unfortunately destroyed in an earthquake.
And GM next time you come to Malta you have to visit.  :)
