WarZone miniatures.
« on: July 07, 2012, 06:56:11 PM »
I might purchase a small collection of so called War Zone miniatures, a miniature based, post apocalyptic squad level skirmish game that is sort of closely related to Mutant Chronicles. However, it seems that everything is long OOP and that leaves me wondering what to do. As i still have an idea for such a project and i like the look of it........i think here's a nice opportunity. And the price is only 1 euro a miniature. On the other hand.....what if i can't find any background or rulebooks anymore.
Is there someone who can shine his light? Cheers.

Hi Legion, Warzone had three editions, this is the first edition (still for sale at the moment):
http://www.princeaugust.ie/target_games/tg9401.html

It came with a number of supplemental books for all armies which you might need to use some of the figures.

Second edition is also available here:
http://www.princeaugust.ie/target_games/tg2420.html

Second edition has an army list for all armies and two specific army supplements for the Bauhaus and Capitol armies. The books provide a lot of extra troops and rules for these two armies which leave the other armies a bit short-changed.

Third edition: "Ultimate Warzone" is a big book which is no longer available. It has all the troop types from first and second edition with some extra's thrown in.

You won't easily find opponents for this game and the models vary a lot in style and quality per army and edition. I love a lot of the second edition Capitol and Bauhaus models and those would be well worth the euro each. Some of the older models are more of an acquired taste so in the end, if I were you, I'd buy the models if I liked the models, and give it a pass if I didn't like them.

There's been a small Warzone revival here on the LAF which kindles my flame as well. You can check these topics for inspiration:

Great to see Warzone getting some more interest!

Personally I prefer the 1st edition of the game as it has better rules that are aimed at small skirmishes between a couple of squads with a character or two thrown in!

Look forward to seeing what you get up to with the project!

All the best!

1st edition is the best in my opinion too. I don't know the 3rd, I played the 2nd one and left it since I didn't like it.

Concerning minis, what I like in Warzone (and chronopia) is the fact that figures are full metal, with some really, really nice old school sculpts sometimes.

In terms of game balance UWZ is the best game IMO. First edition is also terrific, but can easily be powergamed, even by players who don't realize it. The extra goodies individuals could pick could lead to extremely sick combinations.

So if you're going for 1st edition: make sure you and your friends are on the same level when building forces.

And good stuff to see more Warzone! I'm also into it right now and it feels great. I'm working on my third miniature and I love painting Warzone: they lack too much detail so they go fast and look excellent when painted.

I definitely agree about the extras that characters can take in 1st edition. It could easily unbalance the game but with a bit of common sense and open mockery of people who form ubercheese combinations its still great fun.

I never picked up 3rd edition but did get the 2nd edition chronopia. Sadly I was put off by the poor quality of the book rather than its contents. It had pixilated photos, annoying layout and lacked the comic book feel of the earlier editions!

All the best!

Unbalancing was part of the fun in 1st edition. I remember trying to build ultimate wolfbane units with ubber powerfull items, and still easily destroyed by my friend's sick pretorian marauders (for what I remember, unlimited sight, 1 chance on two to cure any wound, insane armor value)  lol That was plenty of fun, balanced or not.

Have all 3 versions of this (in printed format - UWZ is availible to download free from 'Mutantpedia' ??, if you can cover the ink for some 500 pages). Agree that 2nd was the weakest (trying to be too much like 40K), but think UWZ provides the best game if your liking for 'large' actions. Not everything got carried across (No Illian Hellcart), but with both sets it's easy to port stuff over (the main gain from 2nd was the plastic figures - the rules and background/army books were much of a muchness - though never got hold of a copy of Mercury or Dark Eden - which is a shame as i play Mishima as a Corp, though my soul belongs to Illan  :P).

Prince August do seem to have most of the molds, though not for the BIG STUFF (Hurriance, Deathdroid). Suprising how they often 'find' stuff in the warehouse. Worth a look if your interested.

And i still think this 15 year old game beats 40K hands down.  lol :-* ;)
