are 1/72 Scale buildings, 28mm compatable?
« on: April 03, 2008, 04:37:48 PM »
Scale question...  I was shopping for a resin farmhouse type building for scenery when I found a 1/72 scale plastic kit.

I've never purchased anything in 1/72 scale.  Anyone know if this would be suitable for 28mm.  Is it similar to O Scale?

Someone help..

no, 1/72 is roughly 20mm-25mm
BAM (and others) equate 28mm to 1/56. :)

I have an old 20mm Rorke's Drift set that I use with 28mm figures.

It's okay if you squint, or only look at it with your peripheral vision.

Of course, some more serious gamers, of the type you don't find around these parts, deliberately use buildings of a smaller scale than their figures. This is due to being all uptight about ground scale compared to figure scale. They get worried that a particular garden shed is taking up too much space on the table, going by the ground scale it is 200 metres long and a battalion really shouldn't all be able to hide behind it.

You know the kind of thing.

I've always gone with "O" Scale buildings for my 28mm games even tho' they are a bit over-sized for the figs.  Since most of what I run are skirmish games, this allows lots of room inside the buildings for having figs hide and/or shoot out windows etc.

After way too many years of playing games, I can fill a 6' x 12' table for gangster and pulp games and also have enough Wild West era stuff to do the same.

Depends how big the building is I think... I've never quite got my head around the 1/72 vs 1/76 vs 00 vs H0 etc, but I know it's all smaller than 28mm (most of which is really 30mm anyway).

So a big 1/72 or 1/76 building, like my 20mm church below, is pretty passable with the larger figures.
You can see by the figure next to the door that the building is not actually in scale, but superficially, it looks more or less right.

I suspect a small 20mm cottage would look just too titchy with 28mm figures.

The trend amongst scratch builders of 28mm buildings (several expert exponents here on this forum) seems to be to 'go large'.

I suspect commercial 20mm buildings alongside these srots of creations would look very undersized...

Follow this link for a detailed review of Italeri's 1/72 buildings being used by a 25mm/28mm gamer.

http://www.fusiliers.net/wargaming30.htm

They look closer in scale to his 25/28 than the church pictured above.

We got the one with the arches.

One extra comment about the building with arches that he missed on his review :

"The interior is very basic – a wooden upper floor and a sort of stone stove, but no interior detail on the walls."

That sort of stone stove thing is quite a handy handle for lifting the floor out so you can get at the ground floor area.

Very Tuscan or Spanish in appearance, but they might do for central America. Haven't seen the Berlin buildings yet, but I've noticed a kit for Russian cottages that might be handy.

fastolfrus

that almost makes me 2nd guess myself but I think I better stick with the more expensive resin buildings.  I'd hate to order some 1/72 and be disappointed.

Thanks
though

No worries - we are lucky to have a little model shop in town (and a much better one in York just 40 miles away) so can pick up occasional kits without resorting to mail order.

Sorry about resurrecting this old thread, but anyone happen to have pics comparing 1/72 houses by Pegasus Hobbies or 1/72 MiniArt houses ("East European Village House" for example) to 28mm figures?

HO doors are a bit low is the main problem.  And if your playing with ratio rules, such as 1 figure represents 20, 40 etc, then scale for buildings is out the window.

How about Plasticville?  You have a few choices out there.  Check out my terrain site.  I went with a dairy barn.  I know Pegasus and Ertl cowtown has farmhouse type buildings as well.
