Dust Tactics gets Tanks!
« on: July 18, 2012, 07:22:21 PM »
Just saw this:

The Mao

and The Lenin

Quote
With less access to VK-driven technologies, SSU engineers have had to invent other means to combat the powerful walkers deployed by their Axis and Allied foes. Their response? The IS-5 Heavy Tank comes equipped with serious SSU firepower in both of two Damage Resilient configurations. Built to deal with serious threat of enemy aircraft, the IS-5 A “Mao Zedong” controls a battlefield at range with its Quad 85 mm AA Gun. These powerful guns are deadly to enemy aircraft and can be used effectively against ground targets as well. Meanwhile, the SSU has long considered artillery the most important weapon on the modern battlefield and has found success throughout the war with its huge guns. Accordingly, the IS-5 B “Vladimir Lenin,” is a powerful artillery platform, capable of reducing enemy targets to rubble with its massive 252 mm field mortar.

I don't now if the other factions will get tanks. But I'm hoping so, specially the Axis.

WT Heck is that massive mortar thing supposed to be?? It looks kind of like the "Brumbar" 300mm mortar/rocket -- but how would you even play with that in a tactical game? That would leave a 10m wide crater, and have a lethal zone of up to 300-400m from shrapnel. In a game like DUST, it could damage itself!!
Play the game, not the players!

A.k.a. my question about artillery in any tabletop game.  Why would the model even be on the table?  It should be tens of scale miles away at least, so unless your Basilisks are sitting out in the game store parking lot it doesn't make a lot of sense.

I say, make it an objective ;)

Use multiple boards. Have infantry assaulting the artillery's position on another board across the room. There was a GREAT White Dwarf battle where they did just that for 40K, and I think it would work really well, in any war type scenario.

Also: It doesn't sound like the other factions will get tanks, which feels far more thematic to me.

The chassis looks great, the turrets not so much. Still, I think it's one of the better models for Dust so far (not that I'm a fan of the game).

The Lenin turret and gun look like they could fit on the WH40k universe  :( But the AA turret on the Mao looks good.

I don't understand how that's a bad thing. Besides, it just looks like a KV-5.

It's inspired by a IS-53 (they even call it a IS-5), not a KV5. Just look at the frontal armor (the pointed "prow" in the Dust version has 2 driver's hatches)  :):

I just think it's stupid to have that big a gun in a turret. Do you imagine the recoil of that thing? And what about ammunition storage? With a gun like that, how much ammo can they carry? 2 rounds?  :? They should have done a normal turret, but that's just my opinion, of course. But it's still better than a Leman Russ  ;D

I just hope they do some Axis tanks...

Yeah, I'm used to playing the NUTS system and except for light mortars, artillery is either called by an FO or more likely, depending on the scenario (like a chaotic city fight), artillery happens! And you'd better kiss dirt of you don't want to be reduced to dirt. Something like a 300mm HE round would effect a large chunk of the table.
