is there a good book about Scottish Troops in the dark ages?

Osprey would be your best starting point, are you talking about Arthurian/Anglo Saxon period? e.g. Picts, Scots and Irish?

There was a book illustrated by Angus McBride also that dealt with Celtic Warriors, cant rmember name but may have been a contribution with Haythornthwaite also.
