1/48 vs 28mm
« on: July 29, 2012, 04:55:36 PM »
How much difference is there going from 28mm to 1/48?
can you use 1/48 scale tanks with 28mm?
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

Yes you can. There's some pics in one thread (can't find it) where you see 28mm US GIs standing near a 1/48 M4 and they look right (specially if compared with a real-life photo). 1/56 looks small.

Here's my US infantry.

Here's my heer with 1/48 Panzer IV and 1/56 half-track.

I use 1/48 for my tanks and as long you don't fight against 1/56 tanks it look well.

For the armored cars I prefer 1/56.

That old chestnut again? There is enough opposing argument on the web to successfully convince anyone either way. I, for one, disagree with the "1:48th is right for 28mm" argument, as I explain at length on my website (http://mainly28s.com). I go with 1:56th.

As for Predatorpt's comment about the GI's next to the Sherman- please remember that the loads of GI's in the real picture are standing pretty damn close together, while the ones in the model picture are separated by the bases, and, on top of that, are raised by several mm by the bases they're mounted on, while the tank is not mounted on a base.

Anyway, 'nuff said by me- it's your own call- what looks "right" to YOU- not anyone else.

Go with what you think looks right.  I prefer 1/48.  I think 1/56 looks too small and the models don't remain consistently scaled -- with weapons and equipment being much larger than 1/56, larger even than 1/48.

depend on the figures I think, the taller more realistic and less wargamey figures would work fine.
but 1/48 does have a lot more armor and is cheaper the most 1/56 kits, always a good thing.

I've gone with 1/56 scale. The thing to remember
Is that all terrain gets smaller the larger it gets  ie trees get shrunk the most, then buildings etc tanks should be the same. Nearly all war games figures are anatomically incorrect so it's up to you. 1:48 has many kits but most gamers don't want to spend 20 hours building each one
I came, I saw, I went home again..

I have totally moved over to 1/48, mainly due to the quality of the models, the joy of building and painting them, and because they do work really well with 28mm figs, everything else is bullshit. However, in the end, its about what you prefer and not.
Actually, I do have some 1/56 vehicles and such, especially from Die Waffenkammer, that either cant be found in 1/48 or are fine enough to be used with my existing collection of 1/48. Check their Land-Wasser-Schlepper out, and you will know what I mean, also their Kriegslokomotive is fantastic.

On the other hand, you have some fine models in 1/56 from Die Waffenkammer, Warlords and Company B. All of them expanding their ranges rapdily.

I use 1/48th because they are so easy to get in diecast, I buy most of mine from ebay and trips abroad. I have played against people who use only 1/56 and no one really worries too much but most of the people I play against use 1/48th.  So it might b worth thinking about what your opponents use.The Taimya models are pretty good as well and they go well with the diecast vehicles you can get. But as others have said, its really make a choice and stick with it.

My heart goes out to all those very fine 1/48 metal WW2 miniatures that no one ever buys.  Apparently they don't scale well with 1/48 kits!

If Fox Miniatures ever releases Tom Meier's 1/48 Germans and US airborne, that may shake things up a bit.  It may even get me motivated to revamp and re-release our 1/48 M3A1, Luchs, and American T-28 kits again.

If you are not convinced, make a search here on the forum for Michis 1/48 german vehicles. There are plenty of great pictures of his very nice 1/48 model vehicles along with 28mm-32mm miniatures.

Tamiya, Hobby Boss, Hasegawa, Bandai, Italieri, Verlinden, MIG... etc etc. Lots of great models along with a extended series of aftermarket super detail and photo etched sets. Working on a Flakpanzer Coelian my self atm :D

I agree with this statement. Check out Corgi ( mostly 1/50). Solido and Verem. Nothing compares to a metal model that will withstand a long campaign season. Tamiyas 1/48 models with resin hull is also a good alternative.

As a producer of (mostly) 28mm figures I can agree with those who mix 2-3 different scales: 1/56,1/50 and 1/48, but as 28mm is closer to the 1/56 scale this one would be the one I would use, for many years I have collected these 3 different scales and even some 1/43 die-casts, so to me ti´s a matter of enjoying the wargames and the collection too!
