Summer... time for sandcastles!
« on: July 31, 2012, 03:24:20 PM »
I have been collecting this type of packing material for a while and finally got round to making a first (cheap... lol) SF sand building.  Drill some holes, glue some mesh in, make 2 doors, base & flock.  Please note that the texture of the buildings is actually much smoother than in the pics.  Colour & look of the texture are about right in the bottom picture (must be the lighting, I guess).

Very effective, though the doors look a little small.

I used to make buildings out of that stuff for 40K back in high school...but they never turned out that nicely.  Looks fantastic!

Spectacular! I will be shamelessly stealing this idea, and using most of your embellishment ideas too. Well executed.

Nice work! I guess next time I'll buy something packed in that material, I'll have to keep the packing material...

Thank you all for the nice comments.  @ Duncan: the doors are 35mm high, big enough for 28mm, but it is probably the angle the shot is taken from that makes them look smaller.

Yes that can often be the case. Still extremely well executed. Looking forwards to seeing Sand City ;)

I have been collecting this kind of packing material for the last week or so (I seem to have acquired a lot of new electronics recently; no wonder I'm skint) for just this reason. I hope mine turn out as nice as yours!

They look like something an intelligent Insectoid race might create.  Cool.

I have a bunch of these that were awaiting inspiration.  Looks like I've found it.  The addition of the holes really makes these pop.

Love when I find good packing material like that.  I used them for my Quar house and buildings.

Geudens;
What do you buy to get this type of packaging? It is brilliant. They would work great for Star Wars Mos Eisley buildings on Tatooine.

Thanks in advancefor the reply and also for the great idea.

I watched the first 3 movies myself again last week and it was Mos Eisley that indeed inspired me...
I have collected some of this packaging, mostly from electronics, but I can't remeber where this one came from (it might have been given to me).  It all started a couple of years ago when I bought a Senseo coffee machine.  Having to replace it recently, I was looking forward to a second identical set, only to find out they had changed the packaging...  Your best bet is to ask a store that sells electronics: they are bound to throw away multiples each week.
For those wanting to drill holes: I used hole punching tools, "drilling" manually,  to create the windows instead of using a drill.  The material is really reinforced carton, so drilling might not create a clean opening.  Also: this packing material is often not flat at the bottom, so providing a base is probably a must.  Hope this helps.
