Ice station Zebra-Antarctica
« on: February 21, 2008, 04:15:08 PM »
Hi,
I saw a thread recently that had an excellent diorama of a submarine in the ice. I want to do something similar with a secret Nazi base at the south pole.
Artizan have some cool Germans in winter garb but I need some British or Americans as well. Anyone know of any figures suitably clothed and also any pictures to give me painting ideas. I've seen Agis' site with his Ardennes Germans, just need some ideas for the allies.

Thanks for any help

This thread from an earlier discussion may prove useful, although the figures suggested were more modern:

Thanks, I never saw that thread but as you say, I'm looking more at WW2 era. It's possible I could use the Artizan commandos just give them cold weather garb colouring.

I did think that but I also wanted them in smock style gear-similar to the late war Germans.

I haven`t seen any WW2 figures as the US paras are always depicted in light kit or an overcoat at best.

Lead boiler suit have WW1 Yanks and Brits, the Ynaks have BAR and Brownings plus rifles.

South Pole, you would be looking for Royal Marines and Navy really as they would patrol the area from the Falklands and South Georgia

US winter gear was greatcoats all the way through Korea.

Did they camouflage them at all?

Bedsheets over the coats and sometimes whitewash on the helmets. Uncle Sam didn't used to be so big on camo. You were supposed to be marching or in a foxhole.

Here's a nice picture of a painted example of U.S. in greatcoats.  I think these are the Artizan ones mentioned earlier.

Might want to check that link there.

Beezelbufo was only used by the Brits after the Ardennes.
