Flames Of War as a Weird War rule set
« on: August 12, 2012, 11:59:17 AM »
I have been looking at Clockwork Goblin's new line of 15mm Weird War figures and it got me interested in doing some 15mm weird war just as a side project. I was originally going to just downsize SOTR but decided against it as I want entire squads to be on the same base and to do that in SOTR I would have to change quite a few of the rules. One of the reasons I chose Flames of War was not only the Bases thing but also because it has a lot of variety in the armies and unit's. I have very limited knowledge of how to play flames of war and only know what is in the boot camp videos on youtube. One of the problems I see could be balance for the Weird unit's and how they would impact on the game.

What do you guy's think, is it possible and is their anything else I should consider before buying the FoW books.

It depends on what you want from your Weird War games.

If you want WWII but with weirdness then I would recommend you look for a different rules set since FoW has only the most tenuous link to WWII other than the look of the models, it's basically a re-skinned fantasy game.

If you don't care about the WWII-ness of your setting then FoW will give you some combat charts and a reason to throw some dice. Eventually it will tell you who's won the game as well. It will stand up to anything you want to include too since all the stats and values of the different troops and vehicles are pretty much arbitrary anyway.

There is a FOW/Gear Krieg Yahoo group, but unfortunately, there isn't much that's in a complete state. A few army lists (LW German and Americans), plus stat conversions for vehicles and weapons (which I did) :

Someone on TMP posted rules for zombies:

Dan Massey came out with Death Rays of War, which revolves around Earth vs. Flying Saucers:

Someone's idea for US power armour:

Why not look at 'Victory desicion', as they can be played with 'bases' as apposed to single figures - it's actually included in the rules. Better set, and give a good feel for the era. And with the 'Gear Krieg' supplement, you have something to compare the weird stuff to (along with all the old 'BE:world at war' supplements for Gear Krieg - not just walkers but E-series and other weirdness)

The problem with Victory decision is that no one at the club has it so I couldn't get anyone to playtest the units that I would create rules for. On the other Hand a few guys at the club use crossfire rules so I might use them and have a few units based on matakishi's stuff. If I do choose FoW as my definite choice those power armoured guys and the zombie rules will be perfect with just a bit of tweaking.
