3D Prints and Moulding
« on: August 03, 2012, 01:43:35 PM »
Hi,

This one is for the forum expert mouldmakers. I'm modelling 3D weapons and equipment for 20mm and 28mm figures but from what I've seen they look a bit fragile. Can I use small 3D prints in spin casting moulds or is it better to make RTV copies first and cast them in metal/resin?

Cheers,

Nuno

that depends on the material, but as plasticard and other plastics melt in vulcanisation i think it might be better to make some copies in resin first.
otherwise the master and the mould might be worthless.

Most 3d prints will work in low-temp silicon molds just fine.
I do it all the time.

Thanks. That's good news. I'll have a go at it and see how it works out.

Does depend how fragile it is too. I've done a little work with colour 3D print-outs and they had to be doped with superglue to give them a bit more strength.
