I know that in the SYW line was used to repel cavalry, but does anyone know when hollow square was first used, and by which army.  A drill book reference would be most useful as well.

Thanks. I know lots of pre gunpowder armies used it, but what about gunpowder armies?

Pretty sure the Swiss cantons used them.
