I don't want to be a whine, but: This is why I wish people would use the "Location" field to actually state their location! The Sci-Fi Channel in what country? I'm presuming US, but I don't really know what other parts of the world the channel is available in. I know there's some international version of the channel available here in Sweden and presumably most of the rest of Europe too.

The Sci-Fi channel programming is not the same everywhere... In fact, I'd also be glad that these topics would be accompanied with data on the broadcast origin.

I don't think you did, because that wasn't the point :P

I'm certainly not asking you to keep it to yourself. I'm merely pointing out, and not so much to you specifically as to internet users generally, that there's a lot of information that can sound unintentionally cryptic when the reader doesn't know what country is being talked about.

Also, the fact that half the people on any forum use the "Location" field to post some joke, as opposed to actually stating their location, is a pet peeve of mine. Mainly because every joke has been done a million times already. The range of jocular uses for the "Location" field has been exhausted to the point where it's starting to feel like a joke itself. This goes for pretty much every forum I've ever seen, not just LAF.

Well I ain't changing my 'location' field.  :)

But I do, on the other hand, always state what country and TV channel I'm talking about when posting a "Such-and-such is on TV tonight" kind of topic.

I like the funny little things people write instead of their actual location. They amuse me. I am a little childish in that perhaps, but that's not always a bad thing.

It just feels a bit forced to me, that's all. Sometimes I get the impression that people actually spend time staring at the empty "Location" field and trying to think of something funny to write, when they could simply jot down their actual location and get on with things.

Remember how, a few years ago (perhaps not on this forum, but on the internet in general), everyone Photoshopped their own elaborate, oversized images to put in their forum signatures, typically involving corny imagery and turgid quotes? Then everyone stopped doing it because they realized how over-the-top it got? I think of this as a similar thing.

But now it's starting to sound like I'm having a big, serious problem with this, which I'm not. This is just a pet peeve, and isn't the thing about pet peeves, after all, that they're small and ultimately insignificant?

Yes, personally with me it is siggys.

I find even text signatures a little annoying (if there is a lot of text, rather than just a website link). Picture ones more so, and animated ones are totally beyond the pale. It's just the thing of having to read the same lines of text over and over in a discussion, or look at the same stupid flashing image twenty times.

That's not to say I haven't dabbled in them myself a little in other places. But I never claimed not to be a hypocrite.  :) And I'm not going to start any wars over it, so let's not fall out. It's only the animated ones I really hate, I like looking down my nose and sneering at the other ones.

I use a cunning ad blocking thingamy to block all sig images.

It's not ads I worry about, its flashing or animated things.
