"Chameleon Nano Flakes" for rainbow-coloured special effects
« on: September 17, 2012, 12:09:30 PM »
Hello,

I just found this while randomly searching for completely unrelated images.

There appears to exist a product called chameleon nano flakes that, when mixed into a clear medium and applied over a surface, give a multi.colour effect depending on the light conditions, like those cars you see in real-life that have that rainbow-varnish on them and shimmer mainly in greens and oranges.

Very interesting, apparently useful for a wide range of objects, such as (obviously) vehicles, visors, goggles, energy shields and swords, etc.

Interesting, So far I used special acrylics for this effect (Pelikan does them for their PLAKA Brand under the name "Prisma-Color").
Does he tell, where he got that particles from?
Far less active than I used to...

No, the link has no source for the flakes. Some kind of plastic model colour I presume, or something from an art shop.

Then I'll have to stay with my PLAKAs, wich are not as easy to use as one might suppose :(

My mate Pete Taylor, he of 80's GW Skaven fame, works in the paint industry and has supplied me in the past with the pigments used in interference paints.  I think they were created for Nissan but am not sure.  They are the ones where a car looks say yellow from one direction but as you move it becomes red or purple.  My wife has used them in a carrier fluid with her crafting but I have never thought about using them on miniatures before.

Might be a good choice for carapaces of giant beetles. or maybe as wings and eyes of a dragonfly :)
