The Start of my 15mm Scifi City
« on: September 18, 2012, 07:34:02 AM »
In preparation for my 5150:New Beginnings campaign, here's pictures of my first two Prefab Buildings - a shop and a bar.

Details of their production and some shanty homes can be found on my blog http://tenmilwargames.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/scifi-scenery-so-far.html.

I don\'t know whether to be a good example or a horrible warning.

Looks good! Especially I like the color choices. Houses do not have to always be rusty brown / grey / black / metallic..
So thumbs up for that. Also the overal painting looks good. You have succeeded to give them a weathered look using shades of color nicely.

I will take a look at your blog.

Thanks Relic,

The buildings are made of what we call in the UK electrical pattress boxes and blank plates.

I wanted a pre-fab feel to them as if they are shipped in bulk via a cargo ship and then the owners/occupiers can customise (pimp?) them for their own purposes. Hence the various colours.

I don't actually do any shading as such. I use a black undercoat and then use cheap acrylics (Anita's Craft Paint). It doesn't much pigment compared with the likes of GW, Vallejo, etc so the black shows through so I just build up layers of paint to reduce the darkness. Then just one quick drybrush of a paler colour to highlight.

[I use the same process for my figures too.]

Where did the bar sign come from?  Nifty.

It comes from the end of a swizzle stick that I got in a drink about 15 years ago. I've been storing it in my bits box ever since knowing one day I'd have a use for it.  :)

Cool.  Have you thought about putting big blocky numbers on them.  I think they would look nice with a contrasting stripe running around them too.  Also I would paint the doors a different color from the main structure.  Over all though I think they look really cool!

I did think about using several colours on each building but wanted to create a frontier city where pragmaticism guides everything and aesthetics goes out the window.
Unless a number or different colour achieves something, they won't bother using it. I have some storage huts which look very similar so they will have numbers to differentiate them.

Very cool stuff! I really like your choice of vehicles to go with these. Feels very 1970s sci-fi. I agree that they would be pepped up with some numbering or signage. Even the most out of the way, hole in the wall will have badly stenciled NO PARKING signs or event posters.
