I have used textured wallpaper from the local B&Q store for Sci-Fi scenery, cheap (especially for large areas) as you only need to buy one roll.

Alex I'm heading up to Essex this weekend and will visit that little train/model shop where I stock up on plasticard, they have loads of different kinds of checkplate and I have to say they are very well priced.

I'll grab you some and post on.

Have a look here Alex, they do plenty of different scales.

Overpriced by at least four times compared to the little shop I'm talking about, leave it with me, you will get your industrial look. ;)

It'd be somewhat delicate, but it'd be reasonably cheap.
Use wood, tacky, or white glue (pva) on the back to give it some support and that can strengthen the delicate details.  My two cents.

Svenn,

Any links? That sounds useful for Roman style streets.

Tia.  :)

At least one of the crafters / rubber stamping / scrapbooking firms does an embossing folder with a similar pattern. Not sure of the scale though and of course you would need some kind of mangle to run them through.  The one my wife has can only handle A6 sized sheets but you can get them upto A4. Bit of initial outlay but you can then create as many as you want.  I recently bought a "cobble" folder for about £4.
Cheers,
