Painting brick on mdf laser cuts
« on: May 04, 2013, 05:05:10 PM »
I. Am. Going. Mad.

Trying to find a good colour for brick on a sarissa apartment block......
My attempts to build a city for my zombie outbreak are thus being stalled.
Does anyone have any good suggestions?
I beg of you!

Not sure if this will work on MDF, but the colour choices and thought processes shouls help, at least.

I prime it with a matte terracotta spray paint, even a red oxide.  Dry brush over with ravel 'brown' 'beige' and ochre...

Pick out individual bricks with colours you think work.

The mortar matters the colour depends on the age a pollution...  if city leave it dark, if new wipe over with ochre on the red oxide - terracotta base and then dry brush over.

I painted the gaslamp range for Sarissa.

The gaslamp painting looks good. Any idea when it might be out?

Terracota spray paint seems to be easily available (even in supermarkets), the color is great, and the paint finish is really mate, with a nice texture. You should take a look on that.

I will take a look in B&Q tomorrow. Local pound shop had nothing or Asda either.
Looking at his finished work I think terracotta spray is the way to go.

Gaslamp, available soon, just checking through some models, adding to the web and then all ready for the go in a week or 2.

Im doing a step by step painting brickwork, quick and simple for my web site and for the Sarissa site next week.  I had so many people asking for advice at Salute.  Wanting simple and quick painting solutions, so thought it was needed.

Will email you ref stuff JP next week, its a bank holiday so will be all over the place an want to reply more fully to your email.

Try Hobby Craft for Terracotta. and stone - texture spray paints...  also cheap Matt spray.

I purchased the same building from Sarissa last year and base coated it in a cheap burnt umber acrylic from hobbycraft before drybrushing with GW terracotta.  I didn't pick out the mortar as such but gave a very dilute wash with GW space wolf grey and then re-drybrushed, adding variations to the brick tones.  Looks ok for my needs.

Qaslamp painting, matte terracotta spray paint and Terracota spray paint can be found easily from online sources. The color combination of above mentioned paints are beautiful and attractive. You may try anyone which you feels best.

Never heard of that. Thanks man.
I have been painting miniatures for an eternity but scenery is new to me as are some techniques and supplies.
You do not, I repeat, not want to see what I did to a Battleflag building.

I'm using mostly wall paint, artists' acrylics & pastel chalks to paint mine. Not sure if this will help you, but I wrote a little tutorial on how I paint them (bit wip still, but you can get an idea of how the the colours turn out):

I have saved that as a tutorial.
Very impressive ink!
Went to B&Q and got some terracotta paint in a tester pot. Chalks tomorrow from the nearest arty shop. That looks just the ticket.

I just use Apple Barrel craft paint.  Black first than drybrush dark red.  I think there is actually a colour called brick red.  Add a little white, drybush again.  Some of the guys here actually are able to paint the mortar white but I personally like the black between the bricks.  You can watered down browns and creams to do individual bricks, but most of the turn of the century buildings here in Winnipeg have single coloured bricks.  I've used this technique on MDF and plastic.  I then take some water based wood stain and tint the bricks around the windows and at the based to give it a weathered look.
