Akula's Zombie Rules Scenario Ideas
« on: December 15, 2013, 10:15:38 AM »
Have played with these rules about 6 times now. Any ideas for some scenario encounters. We normally go inner city but could go rural.

Thanks in advance,
Michael

I've played a few homemade scenarios for AR:SE.

Z+7: ICE Run
It's the seventh day of the outbreak, and it's become clear that the mayor's "shelter in place" order is running out of time. There are large stretches of the city where the people who had cars have already evacuated, leaving many others barricaded in their flats and houses. The streets are filling with the Infected, and these people can't leave on foot.

ICE is a military acronym, meaning "Isolate, Clear, Evacuate". In theory, it's simple - a scratch force of police and military move into a neighborhood. They cordon off an area, clear the Infected inside the cordon, then load the civilians onto buses and send 'em off to a Safe Zone. The last set of buses should be coming back by then. Move your cordon, lather, rinse, repeat.

Every building has a series of "blind" markers. Investigating the building from the outside has a chance of "resolving" the blind: are there survivors inside or more Infected? The only way to be sure is to go inside.

We used a Noise mechanic which boosted Spawning and also Zed aggression, which made the strategy of driving the bus into the center of the road and getting on a loud-hailer to call all the civilians out are real non-starter.

We also made a mechanic that required a roll for each group of civilians discovered. Most were shocky - they needed to be accompanied to the transport, and were more likely to Flee or Freak Out if confronted by any Infected. Some were Twitchy - if confronted by Infected or any other threat (like, cops with guns) they might Freak Out or Fight Back. Good if you can point them in the right direction, but it was bad when the owner of the "Minuteman Home Defense Center" (IE bunker-like gun shop) Freaked Out when the police came to rescue him.

You really can't be that niave.

ICE isnt about saving people but stopping the infection,  at all costs.

ICE = ISOLATE CONTAIN ERADICATE  o_o

 lol

If you take a look at my zed thread there's a number of battle reports. One focuses on a 'crazies' inspired principle.  That in order to ensure the infection is contained, no one is allowed to survive.

Makes for an interesting three way game. Especially if the players think the army are there to save them,  until they stsrt shooting. ;)

Any ideas for some scenario encounters.

Basics of food, water, medical supplies, weapons, ammo, vehicles and shelter....you always need more of everything.

Radio cries for help, smoke signals, mirrors, searchlights....survivors in need?

cleanup crews, roaming bands of bikers (mobile, well-armed...the original Dawn of the Dead script),

Get to the choppa....boat, bunker....

If you need more inspiration, watch any Romero film and call it research

For anyone who hasn't seen the rules, you can find them on my blog

http://akulasrules.blogspot.co.uk/

They are FREE to Download, but if you like them, it would be great if you could donate a few quid to Combat Stress, (via the link on my blog).... You don't need to download the rules, but your support for this worthwhile cause would be appreciated.

Another idea for a scenario we like is a military/police force is sent into an area to rescue civilians who are trapped in a compound surrounded by Zeds

Again as Matt said any scenario used in any zombie movie/comic/tv series or game will work.

I've often found the simplest ideas generate the best gaming experiences

Even those that are not of the zombie genre.

For example - the Dirty Dozen.

The military needs to send in a unit to take care of business (read nasty zombie outbreak). At the moment the public know very little about the outbreak due to the media being kept in the dark.

However, how would they explain to loved ones the loss of ordinary troops?

The answer? Get some of the crims from the military prisons to do it in return for reducing their 'time'. Of course, if lucky, some won't come back at all . . . . .

There are tons of movies you can use for plots and missions. The zombies are effectively the enemy so think of it like that and then almost any movie with a theme can be used.

I have played a sceanrio where a force are sent in to a facility which has a 2 part chemcial "cure" the force has to bring the 2 components together to effect releasing the cure, this in the face of a herd of zombies moving over so one section defneds the chemcial where the other has to forge into the swarm to capture and retrieve the activator :D

A scenario i'm working on and plan to put on as a game next year is this.

The outbreak is now two weeks and life in slowly falling apart. The police are over whelmed and looters and rioters are everywhere. The army is being sent in to restore order with patrols venturing into the city on search/destroy missions and law and order patrols. You and your platoon have just returned from one such mission. You are tired and you have lost a lot of men and now have a long session of guarding the perimeter of your base.

Watching the latest patrol go out a gut feeling forms in your stomach. You have a feeling something bad is going to happen. The fences keep people out, but they also mean people want in.

Basically, you and your squad must keep part of your base safe from whatever comes your way. It may be zombie horde, refugees wanting in or worse people wanting out.
