Foamboard buildings
« on: October 24, 2012, 07:25:48 PM »
Hello,

I've build three houses with foam core.

I got a gambrel house, a barn and a large farmhouse.

I'd like to give some texture to the walls (especially outside) but I am not sure what should I use.

I was thinking cardboard to make planks at barn, but don't really know what should i use for the buildings. I am not sure I'd make the both planked...maybe very fine sand or plaster?

For the wood I use "frisco sticks", which I weather by hand using a steelbrush to add grains and a stanley knife to weather the edges. The painted result really looks good!

For the plastered look I would use cheap ready made filler preferably brown but I use the white variant.

Cheers

My recommendations:

Coffee stirrers for planks

Masonry paint on walls with a bit of sand added into the paint.

If you can get hold of some thin cork tiles or sheets and glue them to yours walls a couple of thin coats of household emulsion paint should do the trick.

I use some cheap air drying moddeling clay (from the €-Store).
This gives a finish ideal for mediterranean plastered buildings. You can also see the effect on my african houses (pics in our blog!).

I'd say coffee stirrers for the planking, which are effectively free, and filler for the texturing smeared on with one of the coffee stirrers. I'd add some paint to the filler - just in case it takes a knock, then it will reveal a dark colour rather than white.

Thanks guys!

I went with popsickle sticks for barn and pva-sand mixture for the farm, will probably do coffee stirrers laid horizontal for the third house :P
