(BLOG) Don't like goblins. Do like jewels. UPDATE 10/11/2012
« on: October 20, 2012, 07:57:56 PM »
"Don't like goblins. Do like jewels." Or so says the XP-farming little two-year-old tomb-robber I seem to have spawned. He and his older brother cracked out their polydice for a very light dungeon crawl to take on my treasure-hoarding gobbos. Good times. Here's an exclusive photo for LAF, not shown on the blog, as a teaser for the full thing:

I have to say as the proud Dad to a 3 year old (though will say himself almost four) who's just painted his first mini, this is inspirational stuff. I might have to give this a shot with Samuel.

Yeah, the proud dad bit might have overruled any actual geekworthiness of the game, but we all certainly enjoyed it. I hope your nearly-four-year-old gets to use his own painted miniature soon, Duncan.

It's neat to see parents bonding with their kids over wargames.

Wee Aggro and I used to game almost once or twice a week.

Cool simple little rules too!

This made me smile from one ear to another, your boys are great and you can be proud about such glorious adventurers. Loved this Report :)

Thanks for posting your Adventures with your Sons. It brings back memories of three  small boys of my own.

Wow, how easy it sounds to please kids and "educate them to become gamers".  lol Wonderful little story, exactly what I would have loved as a kid.

I think the most important aspect of gaming with children is to teach them playfully "how to lose". Not that we want to raise a bunch of losers but as my coach in the US once said: If the other guy beat you fair and square congratulate him - and try harder next time. Don't sulk!

I found that a highly positive attitude but one that children have to learn. So even though your boys won I think it's great that they also had the experience of having to live with setbacks.

gee, I'm being too much of a teacher again. School starts again tomorrow - it must be getting to me.  ;D

Thanks guys :D As long as we're all having fun I hope it will continue. C groaned this afternoon when I got out some figs to prep them for undercoating - "Oh no, more goblins to fight? They are nice figures, though." The geek education continues  lol

@ Doomhippie - couldn't agree more. I plan to increase the challenge now I have a rough feel for how the simple game plays to deliberately allow defeat to be a possibility. Kids who whine when they lose and/or gloat when they win are not fun to be around. I'm a teacher, too, and multitasking surfing LAF with marking student books!  ;)

You've inspired me too - just had a game of Heroquest with my 4 year old this afternoon.

Great time had by all, and although several members of the adventurers' party were lost along the way, he found the treasure, killed the Gargoyle and would like to play again next time, which means I'd better get on with painting the figures up and replacing some of the missing/damaged pieces as its done well to survive from when I had it as a kid!  :D

He took his losses pretty well I must say, although I had to introduce the Barbarian as a latecomer to avoid total disaster for the quest  lol

I definitely agree on the good loser/winner front - essential life skills for the nippers.

Sounds like you're doing better than me on the marking front by the way...  :-[

If they already don't like puny little goblins they are in for a world of hate.

Well, the story continues. More shenanigans! More goblins! Undead! Crossbows! Small boys nearly getting sent to bed early because they swept their dressing gown sleeves over the game board...

Another great instalment. On reflection I realise that I actually game more with my son than anyone else!
