carry on camping
« on: October 21, 2012, 08:55:27 PM »
I'm going with Modern for this, but equally useful for Future and Cthulhu I guess...

this little project has been bubbling away for a while and mainly involves the simply splendid APEX Investigators from Fenris... what those figures initially led me to, was a kind of field research team, useable for UNIT or even a SG-1 kind of set up... the main requirement was a main research tent and that took some working out... but I got there in the end...

all very army surplus and Time Team and I have two of them - a brief description of how I made it is on the blog (although I forgot to take stage by stage pics)... the only stumbling block now is whether I try for a wooden sheet floor or plain grass - both appear equally common on photos of the real thing....

now, all the lab equipment inside needs power, so I needed a generator... this came from a handy sci-fi crate again from Fenris.

I needed to copy the grill for the otherside, so some cack handed press moulding (sorry Ian)...

some floodlights are in progress, but are just sticks as I need to re do the lights...

the final need for this little project were tents for the field workers themselves, so I cut a bit of bluefoam to shape, added wire for the supports and g/s'd it to get a nice smooth(ish) finish...

do want more than one, so not sure how that will press mould... but hey ho...

Indeed look forward to seeing these finished as well as the interior when you decide what your doing. I'd go for planking if I was doing it  ;)

Alternatively those thick plastic mesh duck board things are more commonly used in the present day... in a variety of colours too!  :)

Yep, that's the lightweight stuff... but some of it can be up to a few inches thick, they use it for impromptu or semi-permanent car parks on grass, outdoor fayres and stuff like that. There's even a military grade that can be used to create runways and hard standings, like the old steel 'Marsden Matting'... which of course is another option.

A fine plastic mesh laid over and lightly pressed down on your base material of choice, should give the 'effect' I would think.. or not.  :?
