Steam lorry conversions - where have I seen them?
« on: November 05, 2012, 10:41:30 AM »
I know I have seen photos of Matchbox steam lorries being converted to machine gun carriers etc for VBCW and I have been trying to revisit them. Without any success. Can anyone steer me to the appropriate threads?

I bought another 2 models on Saturday (1922 and 1927 varieties)  to add to the two 1918 Foden's I had.  I am easing into VCBW gradually.

I LOVE the cardboard/pins thing, it looks more like bashed steel plates than plasticcard does. How do you make it durable?

Thanks Bezzo :D

The two dazzle camo ones were a commission for a guy in the States, he was going to put a big naval gun in the rear of the second one.

Luckily the small box I used was pretty sturdy anyway, but I reinforced the joins with adhesive metallic tape just to be sure. Then liberal coats of paint, quickshade and varnish.

Mick, your steam wagons will go down in legend sir!

WOW! how popular were steam lorry's and were they used in the US?

I did base the Police one on the Boilers used in Ireland.  Steam wagons would have been coming to there end in reality but due to oil shortages in the VBCW they have made a return. Both of mine are the smaller makes 1/60 something.  They are alot cheaper than the 1/40 ish models.  Personnel taste as well.

Are they the Matchbox ones - one of which is a yellow Portland Cement branded steam lorry? My local car boot has them regularly for about a pound each. I have two so far, and these pics are inspiring me!

The ones I use are the larger Corgi Vintage Age of Steam which go for £10+ on eBay. It's all a matter of what you think looks ok, I prefer the Corgi scale wise as they are 1/50 :D
