Cheap Humvees for 28mm moderns?
« on: November 23, 2012, 06:49:52 PM »
The title says it all.  I need 3 to 4 Humvees for my 28mm Mogadishu games.  Detail is not as important as price.  I don't want to pay more than $10.00 apiece for them.  Suggestions?

Not sure where or by who, but someone posted some that would be suitable a couple of months ago.

I think that there were various types including one with a Hulk logo...might help with a Google search if you check out the Hulk toys.

Here are the contents of my post http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=44604.0 on the topic;

I have been looking for 1/48 Humvees for some ATZ action as that is the scale I like for cars. But all I could find was the expesive 1/48 Tamiya kits. Sweet kits, but too pricey for my wallet. Then I stumbled upon these by Maisto on Ebay. I got one for $6 and the other for $10, and that included shipping.

Look for Spiderman or Hulk Humvees by Maesto with pull back action.
Be careful as Maisto also makes matchbox sized ones.

They come in at just about perfect 1/48 by my measuring.
3 7/8" long, 1 3/4" wide,1 1/2" tall

But they say 1/40 on the bottom.

1=RAFM USX Modern, 2=GW Guard 3=Hasslefree

4A=Eureka Marine, 4B=Eureka Marine on slotta [which is how I'll mount them]

Take out two small screws and you get...

Carefull though the Hulk Humvee had pink glass? :o

Luckily the windshield was flat and so got replaced with a piece of blister plastic

A quick spray of Testors Modern Sand, a wash & drybush and now my National Guardsmen have a spiffy new ride. Now to paint my National Guardsmen ::)

Enjoy.
Amalric

Good luck
I look forward to seeing yours

It seems like the Walmart, Dollar Stores, Rite Aids in my area only carry the matchbox sized ones.  I've been burnt before buying off eBay, and finding things were not the size they were advertised to be.

Perhaps the Corgi Tactical Strike range would be more suited. Come in Sand and Woodland pattern, with a 50 cal in the ring mount, occasionally you will find the TOW version as well. 1/64 scale.

Check out the selection of loose toy cars at drug stores like Walgreens, Rite-Aid etc. They are usually found on spinner racks. Mostly they range from 1/64th to 1/48th. all depends on the size of the vehicle.

Hot wheels made a set that was called "Custom Motors" Linky . Used it to build a truck for my near-future boys, and had some great gubbins left over for all kinds of future projects. The roof peg-holes need filling in (I backed it with plasticard then used various putties and gap-filling superglues, plus a lot of sanding), and based it on a piece of basswood so that it was 'level' with my slottabased guys, but otherwise worked a treat.

Go to Toys R Us...a three pack of Fast Lane vehicles has one tan hummer in it plus two other cars. The scale is perfect for 28mm figures. I pulled mine apart (unscrewed it from the chasis, and carefully pulled the plastic winshields and lights off and repainted the humvee body), then re-assembled it once it was painted up a dirty looking humvee for desert terrain. I think the three pack was about $15, which works out to be $5 for the humvee. I bought 3 packs. My vehicles look exactly like Amalric's once they were painted.

Here's my take on two Maisto Humvees, bought through Ebay. They do look somewhat tiny (or is it just me?) next to the Marines but I don't let such a minor detail bother me. And of course I can always get some smaller Marines at some point...

edit: oh, and as you can see, there's few holes in the roofs. Need to plug them, maybe even build a turret of some sort for them.

Hehe, I knew somebody would ask about it... unfortunately I can't take any credit as the effect was on the glass. Good for me :D All I did was to take off the stowage on the roof (thus leaving the holes visible) and repaint a bit to lighter shade of desert colour (Vallejo Iraqi Sand, GW Sepia Wash and light drybrush again). But I think that kind of dust effect would be somewhat easy to do, either with airbrush or then very light stippling.

Came across the technique on some modelling site. He created a mask for the clear part and then sprayed a fine layer on the window with an airbrush.

Well you have to remember two things. First, the scale of said Marine figs. Second, the Hummer isn't standing on the same base as the Marine minis are. Put four bases down and see how the Hummer looks then.
I find the Maisto Hummers work very well with the 28mm "heroic" line of minis. Though if the Marines are Black Scorpion for example they are bigger and i can see the size being an issue. :-)
