very specific rules needed
« on: December 13, 2012, 12:27:27 AM »
I guess this is Apoc...

In am looking for some rules that will meet these criteria.

1) Because they are going to be in the very infrequently run category they should not be obscenely expensive.

2) The goal is to have multiple players with teams of NLT 3 and NMT 6 figures on a team.  More figures/less tech on each team.  Combat/Science/mechanical-electronics/psychic skills vary between teams.

3) The setting would be that a series of jump anomalies put their FTL ships in (with engines damaged beyond repair) coasting in slowly deteriorating orbits around a planet.  Basically the over use of FTL has started systematic failure of the fabric of the universe and they are the "first" misfortunate ships to discover this.   Or not...

4) The planet shows signs of having been of a technology level beyond the ships trapped in orbit but appears to be deserted of intelligent life.

5) There are native life forms roaming the planet but all the ship's sensors are damaged enough only to give general clues of the existence of life (plants/animals indicated by malfunctioning sensors) on the surface.

6) Each team will need to recover certain items (some common/some unique to one team's needs) to eventually allow them to escape the orbit and seek return to their home.

7)  Some of the teams actively engaged in war with another team, some are mutually hostile, and some - while not hostile currently - have issues (history, prejudice, etc.,) with each other.  Two teams will be "allied" with each other but it's a alliance of necessity only and both may need an item that possibly may be "singular" in game terms.

8) Oh yes, the sun is unstable and may nova.

Any suggestions (thinking of kitbashing a set from the rules i currently own or were inspirational in the past) for these parameters?

Gracias,

Glenn

Those are some very specific criteria!

A few of your requirements seem more about the fluff or background of the game, or an additional mechanic that could indeed be bolted onto your favourite system.

I might not be as rules aware as other people on here, but I'm pretty sure kitbashing will be your best bet; take your favourite or a set of otherwise appropriate rules and tinker with them until you get what you want. I've been doing this a lot lately, with encouraging results. I've turned CROM into a pulp sci fi skirmish, FUBAR into Resident Evil 5.5 and LOTR SBG into ASoIaF!

Any rule set you find won't be perfect and will require tweaking. You might as well go the whole hog and just start bashing together exactly what you want. If you do, I'd be interested in seeing what it looks like!

Not seen snyhting like that, though elements of ATZ for campagin and interaction with local etc may work. Mutants and Deathrays will give you campaing and survival aspects and future tech and critters.

Not sure and agree with the above a kitbash of the highest order methinks

Sounds a fair bit like Infinity with the Paradiso book added to the mix 8)

I think everything else expect the campaing system from Paradiso is downloadable for free from Corvus Belli's site. Haven't looked at what actually comes with the Paradiso download tho since we've got the book. Should anyway but can't be bothered right now.

You'll have to ballpark some of the troops I expect but it's not really all that difficult in I since the points costing systems look fairly rudimentary in any case.

How about Nuclear Renaissance?

http://www.ramshacklegames.co.uk/nuclear/downloads.html

Its a pretty detailed game. Its activation based, that is you move one guy, I move one guy, player 3 moves a guy, then back to you. The game easily supports up to 5 players. You can do more but it just takes a while!

Its got a good character and vehicle generation system, its very robust and lets you make anything form hordes of goons to powerful heroes, so making different teams that are balanced is quite easy to do (unless someone cheeses out!)

The basic rules are free to download. Ive got a whole load more stuff that Im putting into a book, so if you like the basic game then email me for more stuff.......
This includes animals from big to small.

You can do quite a bit with Savage Worlds' skirmish ruleset called "Showdown!" It's free, so it's worth checking out. There's a full-on RPG that has sci-fi sourcebooks you could pick up eventually if you think that there are rules you want to incorporate into your troops/scenarios.

I would offer 'After the Horsemen' from 2 Hour Wargames, which is similar to ATZ, but without the Zombies. It used standard weapon types, to which you could add future-tech. It has good scavenge, encounter and similar rules, which would work well for 'new encounters' between differing groups. Obviously you will develop 'animosities/friendships' etc, between groups, as the campaign progresses.

You can download the core rules 'Chain Reaction' from the two hour site, for free, so you can try before you buy.

I recommend "2085: Warlords of the Wastelands" available as a free download at www.skankgame.com. Simple to learn, and very adaptable rules set. My group has  modified them for a "Zombie Breakout" campaign, and using them for "Post-Apoc Survivor" games. Can't beat the price! Crooked Dice 7TV series of rules might work for you, but the cost can start to add up. I'm going to have to try some of the rules sets already mentioned. I love this site!   :-*

Wow,  :o  lots to read. 8)

I have CR final version.   :)

I downloaded 2085:Warlords of the Wastelands, Star Mogul, and NucRen2.   :)

I will need to obtain the showdown freebie. :)

I know there were other good rules mentioned but I think I will read these first.

Edit:  downloaded Showdown stuff too, why not?   o_o

Yes, the fluff is very specific  ::) but if the rules are fluff-free or can be adapted easily they should be reasonable candidates.    ;)

Thanks  to all for the suggestions!

Gracias,

Glenn

If you like the basic system please do email or pm me, as I have an expansion in development that covers alot of the stuff you will want to do (more equipment and specialised skills). The expansion is ready, Im just (slowly) doing the layout for printing.

Great to hear, Curtis! I like NR2, but some more options for it would be great!
