The Great Goblin and his lackeys
« on: December 22, 2012, 04:11:59 PM »
So after having seen the really awe inspiring thread of "a dwarf a day" I feel really unsure if I should even post anything from the hobbit box. But then of course this is what the forum is all about: showing (off) what we paint, let others enjoy/criticize it and improve our talents. So here we go.

The first three pics show the Great Goblin in all his ugliness. I'm still not really convinced by the model (and the design in the movie for that matter), but I decided to give it a try anyway. I decided not to go for the look the critter has in the movies. From the size of it it could be some kind of troll or at least partly a troll. So I tried to paint the model closer to that than as a white albino monster.

I went for a dark greyish hide on the back, shoulders and legs while the belly recieved a more flesh clolored wash. After basecoating the model in black it recieved a few bursts of white spray paint, enough to define the areas of light and shadow. After that the baack was washed in a dark seagreen/black mixture with black painted on the wet paint in the areas of deep shadow. The belly was given a wash of sepia and other brownish washes. I tried to make sure to pick out the areas with shadows by using darked shades in there. A bit of purple was painted yet again of the still very wet areas with deeper shadows to get more contrast. The face was then picked out with a few highlights.

The model is still work in progress, as the staff hasn't been finished yet. Eventually I think I might use that model as some kind of troll shaman.

Next up a few wip pictures of some goblins. I remember writing that GW had done a terrible job painting there's. I still believe that is true. But honestly, my attempt to paint all 36 goblins in one go pretty much left me stranded in the middle of nowhere. I basically just washed them in various colors to get a variety of skin tones. But the washes turned out being too dark which means I'll have to highlight all 36 gobos... Exactly what I never wanted to do in the first place. So here are a few pics.

I haven't painted any eyes or teeth yet. Obviously, as I still work on the skin tones...

In this second picture you can see some work on the goblin in the middle. That's the result of Vikotniks attempt to salvage something. Maybe that's the way to go, just put on some brutal highlights in very few places. I really am not going to go into painting lots of details on 36 goblins! No sir!

If any of you can come up with an idea what to do with them just go ahead, I'm happy for anything that helps getting these things from my painting table...  :D

By the way, in the box are all in all over 50 models plus scenery. That's less than actually 2 Euro per model. Not such a bad bargain after all.

I really like the colour choices on these fellas.
A HUGE improvement on the 'official' paintjobs.
Love the Goblin King!

I'm liking 'em!

The Big Guy is really cool.

After the holiday period I am going to clean up assemble and get started on mine.  I have no doubts yours are going to look a ton better after seeing this start.  And after that Dwarf A Day I am just appalled at how mine are sure to turn out when compared...

I actually quite like those goblin models (just not the awful GW pjs) and may pick up a pack in the future. I'd go for earthy greens and browns too, colour-wise. Still not convinced by the big guy either, but regardless you've done a cracking job on him.

I generally go for the sillier looking Goblin types; HOWEVER, I think these Guys are PRETTY DARN COOL...especially the one second from the left in the first group. AND I really like the direction you're going in with the color choices & brushwork. Keep the faith...these Fellow are going to be something special when complete.

GW's painting is so rubbish lately, probably because they make everything look cartoony. These look amazing!

I love the alternative colours on the gobbos!

Especially the color choice of the goblin king is very interesting. Similar to the old GW LOTR cave trolls.

That was what I tried to achieve. I think the Great Goblins benefits from looking a little more darkish.
