2012's Last Model - Now 2013's First Model!
« on: December 31, 2012, 02:58:07 PM »
This is the last thing I'm making this year.  It's the Gunsmith's Shop from BattleFlag: http://www.wargame-buildings.com/old-west-deluxe-kits.html.  I'm really impressed with the way it went together.  It does take a bit of thinking about before starting, when you're not very used to building laser-cut models.  But having done the requisite cogitating, it went together very well indeed.  It still needs a few things doing - a proper base, more weathering, window panes, perhaps an interior - but is otherwise done.  There is next to no cleaning up required with these models.  The fiddliest bit is fitting the (optional) shingles to the roof (you can just glue some battens to the roof, to make it look as though it's finished with tar paper), but once you get into your stride, they just become a bit tedious!  I decided that the roof still looked too plain, so I looked at some photos of real shingles on the web, then set in and highlighted them - yet more tedium!!  This has ended up being a 'newish' building.  I'm going, I think, to build a little town - and the buildings will, I hope all be different ages, with different amounts of weathering.

2013 is going to be 'The Year of the Gunfight' - building a town and painting some gunfighters (and perhaps a few civilians, and probably some Native Americans too).

Happy New Year Everyone!!!!!!

Nice work!
 :-*

Looking like a 'newish' building with just the right amount of weathering.

They do seem to work really well, being lasercut. Nice clean joins on the corners.

Nicely done Phil. I've got one of these on the way too. I really rate the battleflag stuff.

Did you paint it with a brush? I'm tempted to drag the airbrush out of retirement for mine but your results look really nice.  :)

Thanks!!

I was going to use my airbrush too, but inertia got the better of me.  The main thing you have to watch is that the surface can turn 'woolly' if you drybrush heavily!  The surface is a little absorbent too - Richard (owner of Battleflag) recommends priming with Halfords' white spray primer, but I decided that would make a lot of work, repainting all the 'woodwork' brown again, so I just brush painted two light coats and it seemed to work fine.

Going to build the jail next.  And then I might paint a few figures.

SUPER COOL ! I got this one on stock now. I'm building the saloon building which will probably be finished in a few days...Maybe do this or the sheriff office next...

Anyway I really like your quote:  "2013 is going to be 'The Year of the Gunfight'"

I think I will gladly join you in that enterprise...!!!

Lovely building. Great work there.

As a side note. I use halfords grey primer for all my modelling needs. Top stuff. It's effectionatly known as "sticks like s#*t" with me and my brothers as it has yet to find a surface it doesn't stick to. Takes paint really well too.

Back on topic.
I'm heading for a year of the gunfight too. Just picked up a shed load of foundry old west. It's gonna be fun.

The sickle in the fruitful field;
The sword he sung a song of death,
But could not make the sickle yield."

Stop it right now!

I am having trouble resisting doing some of this lark myself with all these recent great threads showing these buildings.
You getting into it is not going to help!

That looks great, I like how you've weathered the boardwalk - is that just drybrushing with black or something?
