First try with the CROM! rules
« on: January 03, 2013, 07:05:46 PM »
We recently tried out the Crom fantasy adventure rules from Matakishi's Tea House. Here's a brief report with some game pictures:

A fun set of rules that really captures the atmosphere of the stories and movies.

lovely scenery! It's a great little game too. I found that the sniping wasn't such an issue so long as there's plenty of scenery.

Love it!  The scenery is very inspirational.  I've been looking for something similar to your set up.  Thanks!

Now that is scenery!

Post some pics next time, I don't think people know how awesome the game looks.

Very nice indeed Jeff!!

Hopefully you'll run this at Cold Wars and/or Fall In so I get a chance of either seeing it or playing.

Great looking game.

Really cool stuff  :D

I assume the princess in some distress is one of RAFM's NPC Encounters range?

Thanks all for the kinds words.

I may run a Crom game at one of the HMGS conventions in the future.  The rules are easy to pick up and fast playing so would be perfect for convention play.  This year however I'm hoping to work up a "weird" Roman game.

The Temple is mostly scratch-built from styrofoam and corkboard with details added from craft store bits and the very useful plastic "Bag of Cthulhus" The dome is half of an old toy dinosaur egg.  The buildings in the Shemite village are foamboard, a coupe Game Craft pre-cuts but mostly scratch-built.

I got the princess in distress figure from the Ral Partha booth at one of the US East Coast conventions, from a big bin marked "Girls Gone Wild" so I assume its an old Ral Partha.  Conan and Subotai are old Grenadier figures while Red Sonja is from Reaper.  Most of the snake men are from Heroscape.  The rest are a mix from a wide range of manufacturers.

Damien, thanks for posting the picture in the thread.  Are there instructions anywhere in the forum for how to do that?

Looks great! I have a friend (fellow LAFer Estarriol, who posted previously) who is working on a Conan project using the CROM! rules and can't wait to try it out. Thanks for suitably whetting my appetite!

I'm currently reading a few old swedish anthologies of Conan stories. With the recent posts on CROM! I've finally taken the plunge and ordered it yesterday.

From what I've read of the rules mechanics it would work fairly well as a DROKK! game too... I watched the new Dredd movie yesterday (surprised it was NOT a steaming turd) and instantly had a hankering for gaming Dredd too.

It's basically just echoing what's already been said here, but that's some awesome scenery! Very impressive tablet setup!

Sci Fi shooty version of CROM is under development :) funnily enough I will probably use my Dredd figures with it although that's not it's primary aim.

Good news that, Paul! Any ETA? I have a slew of Star Wars prepaints that I really want to play with but haven't been able to find a fitting rule set yet.

I also thought the rules would work great for Three Musketeers-style swashbuckling games.

Fuck me, I'm pumped about CROM! Read the rules yesterday, and what a joy it was! 29 pages of simple, straightforward and cleanly written rules.

Only downside for me is the lack of rosters, bestiary and "proper" profiles. I really miss a section of guidance on how to build and "balance" a scenario. The system won't replace SOBH / Cavern Crawl / Brink Of Battle but is a nice complement for social games with less game savvy participants. I can see this being a gateway game for me to sucker new players into miniature gaming.
