modular SciFi Gaming Board WiP
« on: January 17, 2013, 05:07:09 AM »
Ladies and Gents,

Here is my WiP for a modular SciFi board of a;
giant space station interior or
mad scientist's lab or
underground super secret zombie filled secret base/lair!

It is based on each tile being 8" x 8" and designed to fit onto my 2' x 4' gaming table.
One tile is 8" x 16" and is a hanger/warehouse idea.
Here they are roughed out of foam core and waiting to be detailed and painted.
Most tiles will be pretty generic, depending on movable scenery for character, while a few will be specific types of chambers/rooms. ie Lab, office, library, lift... etc.

Misc scifi figs thrown in for scale. I will be using this for the 5150 rules by TwoHour Wargames.

I'm sorry for the lousy pics. I'll take better when I'm done, but I wanted to share my progress.

This is a painting test. Too busy with the colors [which didnt show in this lighting anyway] and will get redone.

Painting will be various greys with spots of rust/weathering.
Details to be scarfed from the web and printed and pasted on.
Most doors will be movable.
Inspiration for this is Aliens, StarWars, you know, the usual suspects.

Thanks for looking.
Amalric

The photos are bad :(, but the work is pretty satisfying, this kind of stuff has been a long term dream for me (never achieved 'till now :(). I'd love to see it finished, it's inspiring :).

I have been plotting for ages how to build an underground lair for my KKBB villain- but I just couldn't work out how to do it- your solution is brilliantly simple! Well done.

Of course- storage will be a problem.

I can't wait to see more.

Great work. I especially love the doors :)

Of course- storage will be a problem.

Rob: It does not need to be.
If you use 10x8 board sections you will find that these fit perfectly inside A4 paper boxes.
Make each piece a uniform height, say two inches, and you can get four or five sections in each box.
Alternatively you can use a paper box for each section and make them as tall as you like.
This is the system that I have used for my Mordheim scenery and it is really efficient and protects your scenery well.
 ;)

As Mason says, restricting the module size to fit in an A4 paper box works well and is very cheap (Empty copier paper boxes from work).  They stack well and you can even cut the boxes down to avoid any 'empty' space in them.  I started that with my Geezers terrain and continued with the 7TV/KKBB villains lair:

Reminds me, I really should build more modules....  ::)
2024 Lead Tally: Acq: 013 Ptd: 055  Total: +042
2023 Lead Tally: Acq: 560 Ptd: 056  Total: -504
2009-22 Tally:  Acq: 3293 Ptd: 905  Total: -2388

That is exactly what I should have added: The important bit about acquiring some.
Spot on, that man!
