BATTLETECH - Recon 2013 - 26th May 2013
« on: January 17, 2013, 12:17:10 PM »
Hi all,

Well I am taking my first foray into being a Tournament Organiser and thought what a great opportunity it would be to post my progress on how it goes on here.  In addition there may be some players on here who would fancy either taking part, if they are local, or trying out some of the scenarios with their own collection of players.

I intend to fully model up 3D terrain for the event and provide step by step guides on how some of the scenarios work.  (using pictures with nicely painted stuff)

The whole aim of this event is to encourage New players and Former players back into the wonderful game of Battletech and at the same time provide a tournament that really can be won by anyone.

Anyway,  this is my little players pack that I have developed for the event.  Please feel free to use it as you wish.

Just managed to secure some sponsorship so the prize support has now grown massively.  Awesome.

Those boards do look amazing.

As much as Im happy playing on my old maps, those look like just the business to inspire players old and new alike. How long did they take?

Thanks guys,

The four canyon style boards too one day, the others took about a week in total.

Unfortunately I can't claim that the ideas were mine, I copied someone else's idea with these.

Six more boards to do.

Great work on the boards Rabbitz, I haven't played for over 20 years ,but I did buy a Starter set last year, I though my son might be intrested with the plastic miniatures to paint up.
What did you use to make the hexs with, it almost looks like some form of no more caps or mastic.
I few photos of your construction process and few quick words about the materials used would be good.
Good luck on your gaming day with boards like those the people playing well have a great time over there in WA at your event.

Like everyone else, I once dabbled in Battletech in my youth.  Great looking boards there.  If I played, I'd be stoked to play on boards that nice.

Thanks folks,

Although I am only copying what someone else already made and adding a few little differences so really all praise should go to the person who originally thought this up.

So here are my in progress shots...

The first 12 baseboards.

Hills cut out.  This mountain of stuff is enough for only 6 Boards  :o

The boards can be secured in place by wing-nuts and bolts.

This should stop a 'table nudge' causing to much of an issue.

Each board is planned out on hex paper.

To allow many many different set ups.

These were just a few quick examples.

This is one board.  Map and actual Board.

Here is another.

I then used a hot glue gun to 'Join the dots' to make the hexes.   I didn't join all the dots.  Just enough to get the idea that they were hexes.

Then added sand from the beach to the boards and under-coated with household paint.  (I added Washing up liquid and PVA to the paint)

I forgot to mention how I made the actual hills.  So here we go...

First I mark up a hex template with numbers to correspond with the elevations and then double sided sticky tape it to the ISO board.

Using the template as the guide up against the hot wire it ends up like this.

I then remove the template and cut out all the bits marked as 1 (elevation 1) and repeat the process.  Keep doing that till all the levels are done.

Finally you end up with this.
