20mm late 16th Century
« on: January 23, 2013, 01:29:23 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone know if there are any 20mm late 16th Century, Wars of Religion/Elizabethan ranges? Is there a good 2nd-hand shop of 1/72 scale figures in Europe?

I know Newline or Tumbling Dice did ECW in 20mm, maybe worth a look. Not sure on plastics, think there are some conquistadors...but shudder at plastic ;D

There are several plastic manufacturers in 1/72nd scale (I don't know any working in 1/72nd or 20mm in metal in this period).  Try http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com and look under Periods, and then Renaissance, or Thirty Years War, or early America.  Revell and Caeser both have Conquistador sets (which are compatible and, while similar, combined offer some different poses).

If you can imagine it Ian Kay makes it.

His Renaissance range is more Eastern orientated but there is maybe something in the Late Medievals you might fancy.

Thanks guys. I have this Spanish Fury! project that never takes of because of the figures (not keen on 15mm and not much to choose from in 28mm ). I really want to build those massive formations depicted in engravings and paintings so 20mm sounded a good choice because of plastic (shudder  ::)). Besides, most of my gaming partners are 1/72 and 20mm gamers and I can use some of the scenic and buildings.

I think I'll have to make conversions out of TYW/ECW minis and cast them. Quite surprisingly I like the Irregular minis and they will come handy for Eastern Armies (more focused in Sweden vs Poland). Some early Renaissance can also be "updated" for the later period (French Gendarmes in unbarded horses, etc).

Food for thought...

Just remembered I have seen some of the SHQ ECW figures and they were lovely. Maybe a bit late for but you might find something in there.
Plastics aren't to be sniffed it. They usually have more realistic body proportions than modern 28s. I use them a fair bit for projects I don't want to spend a lot of money on.

Now an Irish army could be built using their irish and some of their scots.

You can also mix in vikings, Normans (possibly some WOTR gear too) and pick some picts and others up from Newline and Tumbling Dice to give you a cracking Irish Rennaisance range in Metal ;)

That would make for sometihgn that could be used independantly or if you fancy as contingents for your Wars of Religion

That's an excellent idea! I could also build a Scotish army with some Highlanders and early renaissance figures.

Works for me. I had started it in 28mm and have a good sized Iirsh force, though figures are ropey TBH, I have the Irish but not enough scots around at the time
