French Revolution skirmish which minis?
« on: January 26, 2013, 10:23:51 AM »
Hi gents,
I'd like to start a French Revolution Skirmish project, it is going to be on small scale, like 10-20 models per side, on the streets of Paris. I'd use Songs of Rifle and Shakos as ruleset. Which minis would you choose? I need guards, I know there's a lot, but I need skirmishing poses, not rank and file positions. And of course I need some gritty Sans-coulottes. Thanks in advance!

I think (but I'm not 100% sure) that Eureka do a very comprehensive range for such a time period.

Eureka are cracking figs, but expensive and not everything is readily available.

Trent miniatures are nice, but chunky and somewhat limited in pose although they do have character.

Foundry have a range still I think as do Elite.

Hope that helps.

I would stick with Foundry. They crop up all the time on Dave Thomas's Ebay page. They are smaller than modern figures but lots of detail and character. They also do all the Sans Coullottes.
I bought a load of the Trent miniatures and gave them away. They were very disappointing. Big huge caricatures of humans. The Irish seem to have based on Prints from the 98 Rebellion which were more or less propaganda pictures.
Old Glory were meant to be re-releasing an old range of French Rev figures that sounded wonderful. But when I contacted them to buy some they had never heard off them?? Which was odd as people on TMP had been able to get them.

Hi and thanks everybody. Looks like foundry has (as often) hit the spot. Many make "Soldiers of the Revolution", "revolutionaries", as to say: Naps; but to play the Revolution itself, it's another matter. Thanks a lot!

I may be wrong, but I have a feeling Eureka may be about to release French Revolution figures. At the moment they do the Revolutionary Wars but there was a recent Eureka advert in a wargames magazine that showed a brief glimpse of a revolutionary sans cullote type figure with the caption "She is coming!"

I got the impression the "she" referred to in the advert was perhaps 'Liberty',often depicted as a female.

Of course I may just be over thinking the whole advert. ;D
"Morning!"

I think she refers to the guillotine set they are about to release.

The Eureka range is massive and has at least 150+ different infantry figures many in skirmishing poses.  You can have them in full dress, campaign dress or in really tattered unforms.
Quality is, as already said, simply top notch.
Truthfully I think these would be ideal for the skirmish game you're planning.

I'm not sure that the entire range is already shown on the Eureka website, so best send Nick an email and he'll send you a list with everything that's available right now.

Hi,

Don't forget some more exciting ranges :
- Dixon (my favourites)
- Magister militum
- Touller.

Very few fights occured in the Paris streets during Revolution, some riots with few kills (even Bastille fall). Not like during the other revolutions : 1830 and 1848 ones (Gavroche and Delacroix painting)
The major fights are the Tuileries attack (perfect for Foundry minis) in 1792 and the royalist movement in 1795 repulsed by a young general called Buonaparte.

The best option for non ending skirmishes is the civil war in the western part of the République with the vendean and chouan conflicts (1793 -1799). It was also consul Bonaparte who signed the peace. For vendeans and chouans, use Touller and some Foundry minis.

The girondin movement in 1793 offered some streets fights mainly in Bordeaux and in Lyon.
