Cover or no Cover

What are your alls' thoughts on basing units (like HMGs or artillery) in cover, like behind a wall or down tree? This is for units exclusively used for play not display.

I do it and I think it looks really nice. I suppose it depends on how much time you want to put into gaming models. For me part of the fun of wargaming is putting together a nice looking army so that little bit of extra detailing always makes your models look great.

you dont feel it effects the game play at all by making the figure look out of place?

Not really. I think as long as you don't count the cover, walls, trees, whatever, towards lines of sight etc and you are sensible with it in gaming terms it shouldn't really interfere with the game at all.

I don't see a problem with it, better still, you could use it to create matching units, identifiable by type of wall, fence, logs, whatever...
some bases with cover I did :

for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
