ACW Union militia query
« on: January 29, 2013, 09:48:14 PM »
Hello all, I noticed recently my local was stocking the new plastic confederate ACW infantry and was wondering if they could be used in a union force as militia units with a less uniform appearance and if such units actually even existed in the first place?

Not knowing allot about union ACW uniforms or armies but having an interest in the period I don't myself have a clue, but would love a reason to use these great new plastics in a union army.

Most union militia units were raised & uniformed by there communities or recieved uniforms from the state & federal governments. Most went into the war with the best uniforms that could be provided. Early in the war many went on campaign in what were really parade uniforms. As the war progressed the union made more of an effort to uniform al nothern troops in the same blue as the federal troops to distinguish them from the conferderates. The union fed fresh troops into the war as whole units. So they went in uniformed. The confederate recruits were fed into existing units often with the cothes they had on their backs. This and the lack of supply for the south created the non-uniformed look for the confederates.

I agree that they are better sculpts, but Union troops tended to wear standard uniforms issued by the Federal or State Quartermasters.

I am hoping that Perrys bring out plastic units in frock coats and Hardee/kepis, in the more dynamic poses.....

Following on from General Lee's comment in the other thread re. Don Troiani, you can find some of his pictures of shell jacket wearing Union troops if you have a nose on his site:

Some units:

12th Indiana (you could paint on the detail at the front of the jacket)

76th Ohio (a little more difficult/fancy detail)
