15th century Catalan ship (rigging added)
« on: February 05, 2013, 06:21:51 PM »
Last december I found the following model kit in a thrift store - no indication of scale and a badly beaten up box with loose pieces no longer on sprue (which could mean missing pieces), but since the hull was there and it looked compatible with 28 mm, I bought it.

I could always use it as a base to build something myself if too much was missing.

Some googling learned it was a 1/50th model, so a nice enough fit for 28 mm. The model was with a full hull for display in a stand, but since I intend to use it for gaming I decided to make it a waterline model and sawed off the bottom. This was a bit harder than I thought - the model is made from very thick plastic.

I inted to us it for 'fantasy pirate' gaming, so the fact that is a ship model 200 years too old for the golden age of piracy really doesn't nother me that much. It looks the part of a slow merchant vessel. I probably didn't cut enough of the bottom to be realistic (a real ship this high in the water would probably roll over), but I kind of like the way it turned out.

I found out that the kit was missing just a few parts: the anchors (I since have bought some from the local modelling shop - almost as expensive as the enitre kit), one tackle block and what I call (by lack of the exact term) the 'poop deck bow sprit'. The last two missing parts I improvised from sprue.

I added a Foundry swashbuckler for scale reference (with an unsuitable base, but you'll get the idea):

Next up: the rigging, final details (anchors, some baskets and sacks) and some more highlighting/weathering/additional colors.

Well, that's really pretty good. A thrift store eh? Go on then, how much did you pay for it? (Not $232 I'll be bound ;))

I paid the glorious amount of 5€ (and an additional 3€ for replacement anchors in the modelling shop) - a lucky find I guess. It's the first sailing ship with rigging I built - a lot easier then rigging WWI planes. I'm rather pleased with the way it turned out. I'll post a picture with the rigging done as soon as I can take a decent picture.

The mast does look tall, wouldn't want to be up there as a 28mm in a storm :)
