10mm Border Reivers?
« on: February 10, 2013, 01:17:51 PM »
Not sure if this really should be here or in medieval, but as the heyday of the reivers was arguably the 16th century, and they wore morion helmets, at least from the mid-16th, and probably had flouncy shirts, and definitely had muskets or at least arquebuses, then I figure this is the place to be.

I'm looking for some 10mm figs that can represent Border Reivers - on horses naturally - armed with either lances or guns (or both). If 16th century Reivers are out of the question, then I'll look at models for earlier periods but then that definitely goes back to medival, I suppose.

There's a great illustration by Angus McBride that pretty much sums up what I'm after:

Minis with some combination(s) of these features would be marvellous. Does anyone have any recommendations for where I should be looking?

Pendraken do Elizabethan and Early 16th Century figures including Scots highlanders (though you obviously need lowlanders for the borders). Sadly not that many pictures on their site.

I've read elsewherer that these folks, though in 12mm, fit in well with most 10mm:

Thanks for the recommendations - sadly, it's a bit difficult to tell whether 'Miniature Figurines' have anything suitable, as there are so few pics on the site. However, Pendraken I think do have some suitable minis, ironically not in the 'Late Medieval', 'Early 16th C English/Scots' and 'Elizabethan' ranges, where I was looking because that's what I'm after, but as JollyBob recommended to me, in the 'English Civil War' range, where various Scots cavalry look fine for what I have in mind.

I know you've said 10mm but if there is any flexibility at all Essex do some really nice ones in 15mm. I know it's not what you're after but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

Yeah, I've just been checking out yar68's 'Bastard Heron's Border Horse' Flodden-themed thread - they look very nice and use the Essex 15s with 'steel bonnets' and lances, which is pretty classic.

Essex do have a Border Lancer and and Mounted Arqubusier in a morion that look pretty good, and I'm not totally wedded to 10mm, that just seemed the most convenient. I shall think on gents, thanks for all your replies, and if anyone else has any suggestions I'll happily take them. But at the mo, the front runners are probably the Pendraken ECW chaps, with a possibility of supplementing them with some Miniature Figurines 12mms if they scale OK.
