colour advise for Fallout Centaur *finished 16/02*

I painted Armorcast's mutant man slug and although I quite like the result already, I feel like he could use some more colour. More precisely the gaps on his back. It doesn't really look like muscle tissue nor bone to me  
So, suggestions are very welcome.

This is what I got already :

Maybe a bit of purple?

Maybe some sort of thin blue-ish purple wash and a bit of puss yellow here and there (on the most raised parts) + a blood-ish red wash in the deepest parts?

As the real thing has a red undertone and blue veines allover the body, you could say it has a purple look to it.
I innitialy discarded that option because I feared it wouldn't be to my taste. However, I did follow up on your advice and lo and behold :
