Madame La Guillotine diorama from Eureka (WIP)
« on: 17 February 2013, 09:09:57 AM »
Recently, I have had the pleasure to build a master model of a French chapel for Eureka Miniatures to act as a backdrop to their wonderful Guillotine set - a part of their growing range of 28mm Wars of the French Revolution range. Alan Marsh has sculpted a brilliant set of figures - condemned prisoners, guards, and a cheering crowd, together with the guillotine itself and a large cart to haul the victims away - and I hoped to do it justice by making a model that would help set the scene. It's a facade only, so is probably not suited for use in wargaming, but here are a few shots of the building under construction, and one of it (mostly) painted.

I'll add more pictures as I get the diorama base finished and more figures painted (I'm not renowned for painting quickly, sorry)

The whole set is going to be available some time around April I believe, to coincide with Salute. I think they'll be available at Cold Wars in the States too.

very very nice!
Is the master carved in plaster, right? or did you use another material?

Thanks Mason.
I've been a member for a couple of years, but not been very active here at all. I was reminded by a friend yesterday about how friendly and genial this place is and thought I should make an effort to get to know people a bit better.

@Sangennaru, the model is built using 5mm balsa sheets as the structuiral material and then coated with a 1mm layer of Polyfilla (a silicone-based filler for cracks in walls) and the stone work is carved into it once it has set really hard. The timber frames and doors are made from balsa wood.

Fantastic work and painting! I have only primed a few of the figures from the first half ot the guillotine set, but that didn't stop me from immediately emailing Rob at Eureka USA and requesting the second half and your lovely facade!

Lovely, great work on it. I could see it working as a corner piece even it is still a facade.

Brilliant result with that! When i have to carve with plaster i usually find hard to work with such a thin layer: even if behind there's balsa, it is quite easy to crack! Maybe it's just me that i'm so strong powerful... lol lol Probably The Thing had the same problem on his attempts in model sculpting.
