Dwarfen mine cart (GW) conversion [WIP]
« on: February 17, 2013, 04:14:31 PM »
HiHo!

I wasn't very lucky with the minecarts that Games Workshop included in the Dwarf Miners box, so I rearranged them in a way that looks less cartoon-like.

Now I wonder if I should put them on tracks (and if I do so, I wonder if i I should use steel rails or wooden guiding tracks as seen here) or maybe just leave them as they are.
Far less active than I used to...

Looks cool!  :-*
About your question: to me, it really depends of its purpose. Is it going to be a unit filler or something else?

Wooden rails are more realistic in terms of human history, but who's to say that the dwarfs aren't really far ahead of humans technologically? Whatever you think is best is the way to go! If it were me, I'd have no problem in believing that dwarven engineering was at least as good as human engineering in the early 1800s. They have steam-engines - why not metal railways too?

Acually I don't know what to use it for. I have a dwarfen brewery, but so far no mines yet. I even don't play dwarfs, I just bught the box for the really big collection of bits in it. Maybe I'll use it as an objective marker or for roleplaying purposes. That kind of favours for the wooden rails, because once you remove the guiding nail the cart can go nearly everywhere. But then there is that old scenic base problem you know the kind of "why did the vampire count drag his gravestone all allong the battlefield? All the Way up to the top of the arcane tower?" The scenic base problem favours no tracks at all. Steel rails would propably look best, but will make less sense than the other two options. I'll propably go with the wooden rails, but I have not settled my mind yet.

I just took a closer look at the waggon/cart wheels. They do not appear to have the 'lip' (I cannot remember the technical term) on the rims to allow them to be used on tracks, so this may affect how you use them???

That's right, but I could model some onto the cart. So far I've seperated the ponies from the integrated bases and had to invert the drawbar, because the ponies now have far less height.

If you're worried about the rails fitting into the scenery you could always put a team of Dwarven track-layers in front of the vehicle for added "realism". There are some good Dwarf sapper miniatures around too (re-purposed miners)...
