Fantasy Buildings( Small update 18/9)
« on: February 22, 2013, 07:26:48 PM »
New project!

I've been asked by Andy at Ainsty Castings to make up a range of buildings to update his 'Old City' range. I'm thinking I can make up some basic levels and have a lot of different bits n bobs to change the style/height/layout of the structure.

Here's my ideas so far...

My idea would allow buildings of any height by adding more levels.  I would have different styles of windows and doors that could be added on, chimney stacks for the side and different roofs to top it off! It would make building a city so easy! So here's my question....Is there anything I can add to this or anything you would like to see done?

Here's what I've started so far(still WIP)....

These are one of the base units I've built and a set of covered stairs that could be added to the side of any building.

The brick work is just cut up blue foam, which has its edges taken off by rolling it between your hands, then it's covered in polyfilla to act as the mortar.

Oh.. I also started some work for the 'knockers' for the doors....

Cheers for looking!

Looks like a terrific idea!  Looking forward to seeing this develop.

So here's my question....Is there anything I can add to this or anything you would like to see done?

Signs!  Tavern signs, blacksmith signs, signs for the fishmonger, butcher, baker, brothel, Fighters' Guild, apothecary,
adventurers' provisions store, hedge wizard, armour merchant...
Would be the winning touch to personalise your buildings (and others') even more, IMO. 8)

Bits wise: maybe some of those pulleys (+ crane hooks), like you still can find on older merchant houses, granaries and harbour buildings?

Fantastic!!
How about some type of 'store front'? Or possibly dormer windows?
Might be too 'modern' though.

Now THIS is a good idea. I'm actually surprised no one's done modular tudor/medieval buildings previously.

Some more items to vary shape would be good. Perhaps a version of your "ground floor" that has a recessed doorway, or other sort of recessed area that units could hide in.

Also add-ons that can be tacked on to the outside, such as that wing you created. Maybe another section with a flat top and a balcony, or even an open shed. For higher levels maybe a balcony?

Very nice so far, My main suggestion would be to do some of the main building blocks with one side consisting of a separate wall so you can put two together to make larger buildings, maybe you could also do a separate interior wall to divide the two up. Or better still provide a floor and four walls that are interchangable?
Other ideas, wooden beam base structure to build a market house/open blacksmiths, interior details, like fireplaces etc. keep the fantasy elements optional so the building can be used as medieval etc.
Will definitely get some of these to add to my scratch built buildings.

Interesting! I'll be watching this with interest.

As far as casting goes, how well do the materials you're using work with the process? They are similar to the materials I use, and this is something I've always been curious about.

Lots of great ideas we will definately incorporate a lot of these.

The Old City Range was a popular seller previously, being made up from modular units which meant you could have many different combinations of buildings, but I pulled it from the site last year as the moulds were past best and I didnt have the masters from when I took over Ainsty. Andy was an obvious choiced to reinvent this range for me and I am very excited about getting it going again.
