Best deal on 28mm WWII armor?
« on: March 04, 2013, 07:46:58 PM »
All,
So I am painting up a nice group of Victory Force minis for some WWII skirmish games. I'd like to get a couple of vehicles, probably an Sdkfz 251, maybe a couple Panzer IVs and maybe a Sherman. Overall, nothing fancy, as I want to focus on infantry combat. What vehicles can I look at that won't break the bank?

Warlord just made a plastic 251 kit that is very reasonable. Seen one in the flesh and they did a nice job. They also have some Panzers and Sherman kits.

Die Waffenkammer for me they are very reasonable in their prices, they have platoon discounts (x3 of a kit). The only thing I really disliked was the shipping, they refund the difference but I lost some money on paypal in the exchange since you are getting money back. They refunded fast, but between the fee and conversion rate I feel like I got nickle and dimed by Paypal. There was a bit of a wait also as I had to wait for my item to be cast, but the quality was nice.

Sometimes you can catch a sale on Westwind Games site or via a game store. They have some inexpensive 1/48 stuff.

Black Tree does some 50% off sales at times, some of those sales covers vehicles. Again they are 1/48 and all metal, so they can be a pain to assemble and some stuff does not fit well and takes a bit of work.

Victory Force miniatures are rather big so you might be better of with 1:48 plastic kits than 1:56 wargames resin like Waffenkammer or BAM.

Indeed, You will have to make the decision whether You want 1/56 or 1/48, because it woul be difficult to combine both scales of the same type. It basically depends on the availability of the vehicles You need. Keep however in mind that for the most parts of WWII captured vehicles were extensively used by both sides.

I would always advise for the 1/48 plastic kits, because they are accurately scaled, cheaper and fit better with 28mm miniatures which are not accurately scaled 1/56 miniatures like the vehicles pretend to be.
but this is only a matter of personal taste

I have some 1/48 and 1/56, while there is a difference side by side, once they are on a table, it isn't a huge scale jump when things are spread out. I use mine for Bolt Action...
1/48 Black Tree Panzer III M, truck, 2 Kubelwagons and a motercycle with mg sidecar
1/60 Tiger I (West Wind)
1/60 Wierbelwind (West Wind)
1/56 Panzer IV G from Diewaffenkammer
1/56 251/1 from Warlord
1/56 Puma from Warlord

I think it is up to personal taste. Most of the group is ok with a varied range of scales around here.

I tend to use 1/48 and 1/50 scale vehicles. There are quite a number of companies making them (Tamiya, Italeri, Airfix, Corgi, etc...). Battlemart.com carries a line of 1/50 scale vehicles for US, British,German, and Russian armies. They are in 1/50 scale, made of resin with some metal parts, and are designed for gaming. I have a couple and they look great on the table next to my SOTR, Artizan, Warlord, and Black Tree minis. You can mix scale, just make sure all vehicles of a type are in the same scale. A 1/48 Sherman next to a 1/56 Sherman doesn't look right.

IMHO diecast vehicles from Corgi, Solido and Verem provide the best value. They come in 1/48-1/50 scale and can usually be picked up at ebay for reasonable prices
