Ged,
Supplementary to the email I sent with other suggestions for images, these may also be of interest. I recall mentioning face pattern shields, on closer inspection many appear to be variants of the Jaguar gods face in various stylisations, which would be entirely logical on reflection.

GED, I've been away to Historicon and then immediately off to Chicago for vacation. A few comments if I may on the beautiful pictures sent in by CDM

By all means make a few of the Jaguar face rounded shields. But I would suggest they be limited to the rulers and highest ranked warriors. Even CDM's pictures show that the majority of the shields are the longer, feather edged "slat-like" shields. Just yesterday, I spent half a day at the Chicago Art Gallery. There, I took a picture of a sculpted maquette of a Mayan warrior from Calakmul, from the Classical era. He also carries the typical rectangular shield. I'll post it when I get to my computer at home.

It is difficult to read too much into Mayan artwork as it is not meant to be representative. For example, take the Mayan ruler in IMG 5111. Do you think that is an accurate representation of his actual headdress? Linda Schele wouldn't think so. It is an exaggerated rendering to emphasize the importance of the character being illustrated.

But more important to this discussion, "Is that a round shield that he is holding"? Perhaps, and perhaps not. Look below the shield and you will see that he holds the handle for the real shield. It is one of those longitudinal slat-like shields, that you can just see curling upward behind the figure's arm. I think that this is the artist's way of showing that the shield is behind the central character. I think the round shield is an ornate "dress" buckler more used for ceremonies and "parade ground" wear than an actual piece of military equipment. I think the presence of the overly ornate headpiece would corroborate that. But that is just my opinion and observation. I could well be wrong.

Secondly, while the figure is well sculpted and painted, the Mayan Warlord is more Mel Gibson than what is historically correct. I'll be happy to be proven wrong, if someone can show me otherwise. Until then, I'd like to see the same figure fitted out with some of the more typical headdresses shown in these beautiful Mayan pieces of art.

Despite what I said above, the reason we play with meticulously painted figures instead of just counters, is for the visual impact of seeing a well painted army. Therefore, I would be happy to field your Warlord figure in my Mayan army, Ged. He does strike an impressive pose, and his obvious visual impact should scare his Conquistador, or Mayan opponents just a bit :D

Looking forward to your new releases.

bowman

thanks for your fascinating input ..im still on  quest regarding the
Mayan use of shield by "combat" troops persay as this seems to be the
most difficult to quantify. the array of blurry images in many pieces
of artwork for the period does not help ..BUT makes me even more
interested
like you im of the opinion the slatted shield saw a lot of use ..makes
sensea against the array of weapons fired at the Mayans..from other mayans and sundry other tribes.
im starting on another tribe as i need to build up equipment for the various tribe and get a decnt range. i read EVERY post on the subject
and mull things over................really though i just want a decent range
out there and will give it my best shot ;)

keep posting amigo!! regards Ged www.gringo4s0.com

Wonderful to have such an icon recognised in a figure range.
Well done,

Keep it up
