Warlord Games, the new Games Workshop discuss...

Warlord Games, The service is excellent, the new(ish) rule set is pretty good, the army lists are nicely produced and the miniatures are of a generally reasonable standard. Yes the pricing is sometimes a bit on the rich side and yes the marketing is a bit 'shouty'.

Sounding familiar so far?

Ok, but at this point they part ways...the GW model is tad more cynical, customer attrition strategy is carefully crafted but broadly breaks down to this...young men with straggly beards come on to you like rabid scientologists the moment you walk into a GW shop and if you take your male offspring they smell blood...get 'em young bleed 'em white and when they discover girls/booze/cannabis 90% of 'em will drop off. The remaining 10% (or core customer base) that's left will have more money for expensive, top end GW and Forgeworld kit as they live in their mums basements until they're 50, and don't waste money on things like deodorants...hurrah and kerching another sale.  Thankfully here comes the next generation of awkward pre-pubescent's ready to plague their Parents for the New Space Marine Ballbagicon power scrotum for their inquisitors...

WG have tried with the Nisei and Buffalo soldier ranges to open up new ideas and OK, they may get it wrong from time to time (Cartoon Japanese) and the same tedious expensive dice ploy as FoW but without the pretty boxes...but they do try.  While I don't buy their minis anymore I do buy their rules.

For the record Paul's sculpt is excellent as is 99.9% of his output, in this particular case not for me as I don't do Russians, but I really liked the Skozeny mini and the Dennis On mini (freebies with army lists) shame I couldn't get hold of them.

As a further aside I'm interested in the hard on that King Tiger seems to have for WG (albeit a little passive aggressive)...Do tell young fella, but only if it's salacious or juicy...If it's boring don't bother...

God save all here and mines a double Brandy.

I still like some GW stuff, and I regularly shower and use deodorant, I live with my girlfriend and I shave my weeny neck beards off.  ;)

For the record, I like that flag bearing figure. I always have a soft spot for such things.

That said, I dislike what Warlord have done with the Bolt Action range for all the reasons mentioned above. Cartoony, muppet faces, near-racist Japanese and what may not yet have been mentioned, the most ridiculously thin rifles ever seen. Looks like the ham fisted men are holding onto sticks.

Oh well can't win them all I suppose. One of mine I enjoy doing the special figures for the books. On closer look the detail is there and up to my usual standard otherwise I would not send him out.

This was taken before the flag was removed for easier casting and also smartened up. Thanks for the constructive criticism ;)

Personally Paul i think it'd a great figure. Yes the flag blowing may be over exaggerated but we look for stuff to have an impact on a table do we not and this will do that. Some people need to remember that we are playing with toys and chill out.

I like the figure too, the flag might be just a bit dramatic, but it is serving its purpose.

Hello,

Just following this thread and firstly I've amended the title. Doesn't require further description in subject heading.

There is no need to go further in describing the distaste for a miniature in such away that you come across as showing a lack of maturity.

Cheers,

Helen
Best wishes,

I like the figure.

I haven't noticed WL sculpts being cartoony... but mainly I have the plastics WWII figures.  I do have a couple of US metal support teams, and they seem fine. Well, and some of the ECW figures, which I also quite like.

This is the kind of thing I am talking about.

It just looks too- cartoony. Not good at all.

Yep I painted this fellow up for the WSS magazine painting Japanese tutorial and whilst I agree there is a certain character reflection I believe this is a matter of own personal taste.

After all you don't need to buy them.

Cheers,

Helen

Has "hard on" changed meaning since I was young?

If not I think I'll join you on the double brandy. Maybe a horse's neck since it's just after lunch.

Don't need the book but would still gladly paint the figure! All those who dislike it feel free to send it along my way if you buy the book!

Apparently so, strange that one, but if it now expresses a dislike for poorly sculpted WWII metal models and overpriced plastic tanks and artillery I have no idea what expression to use to commend the majority of the ECW range of models they do and the quality of rulebooks, so I guess I am forced into a position of not being able to do so due to the sudden and odd change in the English language.

I've already mentioned several times what I like about WG in the past, but it gets ignored so I don't bother :P
