28mm Barbary Pirates / Corsairs (10 April 2008)
« on: April 11, 2008, 03:04:19 AM »
Hi All,

*** Has anyone out there built a 28mm Barbary Pirates / Corsairs ship and crew? ***

I recently picked up a couple of packs of RAFM's corsair pack which comes with three figures:

1. A standing fellow with an Arab sword and a fez.
2. A kneeling fellow with a fez and musket.
3. A more traditional pirate fellow with a head wrap, pistol, and dagger.

I've already built a 28mm WAB Arab / Moor / Saracen / Andalusian army and have some leftover figures including a few odd Ral Partha Sinbad figures from way back when...

I'm very tempted to build a Barbary war galley with crew... and am looking for some inspiration or to see if some wargamers before me have created anything to inspire me. Please share links!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I'm actually starting down the same road. For my ship I'm going to make it relatively simply, using the techniques from this handy site:

http://www.blackbirdmedia.org/lotr/?view=articles&which=corsairShip.php

I think that guy is a LAFer, maybe he'll chime in. If he does he should tell us what manufacturer produced those hot 15mm Arabs he's working on for DBA in his latest update, but I digress.

For my ship I planned on building with the same method but just making it more Dhow and less Umbar.

I think the Prof was on this kick too and there's another thread with some drawings of actual ships

Slight qualification, I'm after a simple dhow for Sindbad, your galley will be obviously a bit harder.

I'm pretty interested in this too - but sadly, it seems noone here has done one :(

Im still finishing off some eureka turkish pirates and have made three dhows and was hoping for inspiration on how to make a bigger ship

So yeah, if anyone has done one im re-asking tha question

Cheers, 8)

This Chinese junk might work with different sails?

I'm certainly no expert, but I'd have to agree with Karl. It looks like it would look good with those Dhow type sails, especially if you're into the more Hollywood style of Pirating  :)

IIRC, the GW Lord of the Rings site has construction details for those sails.

Hello. I'm new here and haven't started on my path of piracy.
But if I remember corectly they used chebecks with latinsails.  Both Sain and France built ones to beat the Algerians with there own weapon.

Using the templates for Umbarship is not far of, or making a more streamlined Dhow.

Hi Steelblade, welcome to LAF 8)

Ldog & Glutes - yeah it would work nicely if someone did it adn there are lots of other things that could be modified into dhows too, i was kinda hoping that somebody out there had actually done it though and could give some pointers

I have a rough idea of what to do (dhows i made here http://forum.backofbeyond.de/viewtopic.php?t=4796&start=0) but i am far from being an expert on tha subject too

Maksim can we see a pic of ur arabs (can u give a link to the RAFM ones - i cant find them), have u made any progrees with a ship?

Anyways ill show u all when i make my galley/dhow/ship...thing :)

I game with the Flagship Games guys and one of  them has done some. I'll try to take photos next time I visit his home.

They're do-able and several manufacturers have very similar ships to the two primary Barbary Corsair ships:

- Xebex
- Barbary War Galley

Flagship and Old Glory are two of them.

Maksim, can we see a pic of your Arabs (can you give a link to the RAFM ones - I can't find them),

Yes, but...

Well, I picked up my RAFM Corsair packs used and couldn't find them on their new site... so sorry, mate, no linkie!

I'll take photos of mine later.

I'm also interested in this pack:

All the King's Men (1759)
Swivels & Wall Guns (1759)
Code: RAF06160
Price: $7.95

I don't think anyone has posted this yet; I was looking at the Blazeaway Miniatures site, and apparently they make an Arab dhow:  http://www.blazeaway.com.au/Shipyard.htm

Hope that's some help!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all of the great advice!

I have taken some phots of my 28mm Barbary Pirates / Corsairs crew if you'd like to peruse them here:

http://6mm-minis.blogspot.com/2008/04/mini-wargaming-28mm-barbary-pirates-27.html

I also have a few others photos including some 28mm WAB El Cid Sudanese spearmen.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Yes, they're a great bunch. Thomas and Rod's interests have wandered from pirates at the moment, but they've still been very supportive of my "pirate-mania" even though their minds are currently wandering towards sci-fi microarmor and other topics. You know how gamers are... wandering eyes and any good-looking mini makes us swoon! LOL

Thomas has mentioned that he built a few Ottoman ships for Lepanto and I'm looking forward to seeing them (...and photographing them) the next time I get a chance to visit.

Sure thing, swabbie!

I took a few appetizer phots here, in the mean time:

Thanks again for your replies.
