My Egyptian Force
« on: February 12, 2014, 10:41:24 AM »
A couple of years ago I was invited to, and took part in a couple of BIG colonial Sudan games at The Grimsby Wargames Society (thanks guys) here in the UK.
This inspired me to start my own Sudan collection.

Here are a few pics of where I'm at with my 1880s Egyptian Force.
The pics were taken on my phone, so are not great but they give an idea of the force.

Artillery

1st Infantry Brigade

Irregular Infantry

Baggage

Casualties

Hicks Pasha Himself

Lastly a couple of images (not very good images!) of a conversion I did to see if I could create a passable early 1880s Sudanese Infantry figure. I used the legs and head from a plastic Perry Ansar and the body (slightly cut about) of a plastic Perry Zouave. Whilst the equipment is not accurate - I think it might be usable.

Help/suggestions/comments etc appreciated

Tim

They look really good. Is you gaming table a permanent board or made of tiles?

Firstly, really great brushwork!  :-*

I'd love to see some close ups of individual models... one cannot learn enough from others.

By the way, where did you get those casualties? I don't think the Perry's do Egyptian casualties? Am I correct?

Darrell.

A real good looking army.
You really don't see many Egyptian armies,
that is a pity.
Well done.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

To answer a couple of questions;

Quendil - My gaming table is not permanent. I made it from sheets of loft insulation, textured with polyfilla and some sand and then all sprayed with sand coloured textured paint. The boards themselves are a little light in colour for my liking but I can live with that.

Atheling - I'd forgotten who made the Egyptian casualties but on searching my bookmarks I found them. They are made by Redoubt Enterprises. Their figures tend to be a bit larger than Perry or Foundry but it's not noticeable with the casualties being prone.

Well done!

Such good work you have done.

I picked up a dusty box of Ral Partha's Colonial Eqyptians at a 'bin' sale.

Made a dandy army. Now I must go dig them out.

Thanks!

That's nice  :)

Everybody should not play only "British" or "Mahdist". The Egyptians also deserve some good generals (/players).

They certainly could have done with some good Generals at the start of the war! i don't think hicks Pasha qualified as being one of the best, mind, nor were his troops!

Probably not, Darrell, but Hicks was graceful enough to get himself killed early on during the war so as not to embarrass his employers any further, so the man must be given credit where credit is due  lol

As far as Brits in Egyptian service are concerned, Valentine Baker was a more competent tactician but the gendarmerie under his command wasn't up to snuff, hence his debacle at Tokar.
