Here's a couple of pics from a slightly different area 'beyond'.  They're a little large but I think you'll appreciate them.  They were all taken in 1920 during the Arab-Jewish riots in Jerusalem.  The last one is exquisite!

Indian & British troops, St.Stephan's Gate

MG Company E, outskirts of city

British patrol

British soldiers, Jaffa Gate

Enjoy!

You see, this is why we need figures in the serge Service Dress with tropical helmets. Also usable for Gallipoli and Salonika. It wasn't all Khaki Drill all the time, by any means.

(Plus all those other uniform variations that I'm always asking for that nobody else would ever buy, please.)

Actually, head swappage with some early war Western Front Brits wouldn't be that hard, I suppose.

Great pics!

If you remove the troops and the Arabic script inthe first photo it would look exactly like some parts of Malta today.
Grand set of pics.

The pictures are from the Matson Collection in the Library of Congress.  There are nearly 6000 photos in the Palestine section alone! Try this link.

Pretty shitty pics, mate. Where are all the colours?

I am kidding, they are the dog's danglies. And you're right, esp. the last one. If I was to put text to it it would be.

Ok so I'm a bit new to this dress stuff. What you seem to be saying is that those guys are wearing the usual ww1 dress with a tropical helmet yes?

Wouldn't that have been a bit warm? They look quite happy.

That is what I'm saying, though I may be proven wrong by someone more knowledgeable. Sure looks like the serge uniform to me, rather than the hot weather alternative that was called Khaki Drill. Just looks a bit too dark to be KD. That get-up was worn in lots of places, such as Gallipoli and Macedonia.

I've never been to Israel, but it can get surprisingly cold in many countries that we imagine are hot all the time.

Looking at that uniform it looks to be of a heavier cloth than the Khaki drill pictures I've seen. Looks more like pictures from well known ww1 battles.

You are probably right about the hot/ cold weather thing. I just imagine a desert type of place to be warm    But then i am pretty dense about a lot of things

Brilliant pics!  and thanks for the link!

Remember it gets really cold in the desert at night.
I've been to Sahara in november, days were warm (+ 30 C),
but the nights were below zero until half an hour after sunrise.

In the 1960ies there were at least one ski resort in Lebanon,
not far from Beirut.

I want that car, complete with Lewis gun! :D
